Men's 50 Free Gary Hall Jr swam his fastest 50 freestyle since he set the American record in 2000. He is seeded third. Cullen Jones swam like a man who already had a spot on the team in tow and looks to be the class of the field after his 21.58. Women's 800 Freestyle: Remember when Kate Zeigler was America's next distance star? A wrench in her ascendance came when Katie Hoff decided to compete in this event. Still, the big stars have looked vulnerable while this trials meet starts to take a bit of a spooky feel. Do not be surprised to see the young Ziegler emerge victorious. Men's 100 Fly: Gil Stovall is the breakout male performer of the meet. While Ian Crocker and Michael Phelps led all qualifiers, Stovall showed great backhalf speed to qualify third for the semi-final. Davis Tarwater, who showed tremendous front-half speed in the 200 fly is also looming. The entire meet we have been waiting to see what kind of form Ian is in and it looks like we may have to wait until the final to find out. Women's 200 Back Four years ago this was the weakest event for either men or women in America. Now in 2008 there are two credible world record threats in this event, both Margaret Hoelzer and Elizabeth Beisel. Beisel made her first splash internationally in this event, while Hoelzer also made her name here prior to becoming one of the fastest women in the history of the 100 backstroke earlier this week. Also watch out for Hayley McGregory, perhaps fueled by the disappointment of her finish in the 100. |
