Coaching Girls vs. Boys

Mrs. Coach | Profile
August 18, 2008

Because Mr. Coach coaches both men and women, people sometimes ask him (or Mrs. Coach if she’s standing closer) which gender he prefers to coach. Mrs. Coach thinks that, if Mr. Coach HAD to make a choice between the two, he might choose the female of the species and the reasons have nothing to do with anything sleazy. If you’ve seen one scantily clad female with overdeveloped trapezius muscles, you’ve seen them all.

It’s just that when you figure you spend 95 percent of your time with an athlete in practice and not meet situations, and one of those genders is a LOT easier to work with in practice situations, it only makes sense that you’d go with the practice-friendly species.

That’s not to say girls can’t be a chore to coach. For starters, girls cry. Usually it’s about stuff that has nothing to do with swimming. Relationship woes top the list of reasons to cry during practice, but so do intra-team personality conflicts, midterm exams, sick pets and the return of high-waisted pants. But, to their credit, girls will cry AND swim. They’re just more efficient that way. Mr. Coach also maintains that girls are fundamentally tougher and that’s very useful in practice situations.

Boys will bitch and moan and whine and complain and touch each other in inappropriate places during practice. They will not only pee in the water during practice, they will announce they just peed in the water during practice. And then when practice is over, they’ll bitch and moan and whine and complain all the way into the showers where they’ll drag chairs in, sit under the water for half an hour, and continue to bitch and moan and whine and complain until the maintenance crew comes to Mr. Coach and tells him to get the boys out of the shower.

Now to be fair, in meet situations boys do seem to function more predictably than girls do, and Mr. Coach does appreciate that. And boys, if so moved by the spirit, will swim through a bulkhead if that’s what the team needs (girls would but, again to their credit, they know that heads don’t grow back).

Mrs. Coach also feels compelled to add that girls are more readily available and responsible babysitters but boys do make for very interesting babysitters. One guy once built a small city out of Tinkertoys in Mr. and Mrs. Coach’s living room. It was so cool looking they left it up for two weeks. And guys’ Lego skills tend to be off the charts.

Once graduated, girls will stay in touch pretty frequently for the first five or so years, but then they’ll disappear into their new lives. The guys disappear at first and then reappear after about three years. And usually when they reappear, the first thing they do is apologize for everything they ever did to make Mr. Coach’s life difficult. It’s like clockwork, the way the guys reappear and apologize.

And then they’ll start bitching and moaning and whining and complaining about something new. In a way, it’s kind of comforting.

To Mr. (or Mrs.) Clark,

I am one of those swimmers who Mrs. Coach based her findings off of. What she is saying here is EXACTLY the truth. It's not sexist. We men in fact will do such things. The girls do the same exact things as listed in this. May I ask why you're offended over something that lists the whole truth with a humorous twist in it?
Mrs. Coach,
Great note. There is one thing you missed. We can't pull chairs into our showers, they're all nailed down.

Hey there, "old" babysitter! Enjoy that clean hair! All's well here, pop in sometime!

I saw that you had a blog when you mentioned it to the twins so I had to check it out. That was very funny and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I would probably have to agree in my coaching experience you are right on even for the younger kids. I hope you and Mr. Coach are doing great and the two little coachlings are fine. I will be sure to keep checking this!

CIARK -

I might be one of the funniest people you will ever meet. You can debate me on a lot of issues but I know stereo typing when i see it. Take a min to look at a dictionary for a second - just a second.
You know why people take offense when you put them into groups by sex, race, etc.... because it is socially unacceptable and a gross over simplification.
Looks like you need to relax buddy. Bold print doesn't make your point any more valid - haha.
ClARK posted August 19 at 9:25pm.
is this what the world has come to?! every time ANYONE points out a difference between two groups, even a REAL difference attested to by dozens if not hundreds of people from BOTH GROUPS, someone is worried about a person somewhere taking offense.

It is NOT stereotyping. mrs coach is simply pointing out things that she noticed in practice, and it is completely unbiased. and if you let your guard down and thaw out your frozen sense of humor, you may actually appreciate this article. until that time, please relax.

Except Dara Torres - now that girl races!
Bet she can pee in a pool to save a good set too.
Garrett Clark posted August 19 at 6:17pm.
Stereo types are based in truths... please someone say something about minorities and let me know how that goes over. Really, then back that up by saying there is truth in it. Haven't we come far enough to realize that stereo typing is a problem.

I give up...
Monkey posted August 19 at 5:15pm.
better to pee in the pool than miss a set...shows dedication...
Hartley posted August 19 at 2:37pm.
i saw people were discussing girls vs. boys times during practices and how girls "practice better" because they are able to put up times close to meet times during fast sets, whereas boys do not. since we're stereotyping, i hope i'm allowed to say this:

girls in general don't have that extra gear that guys have. they swim slightly faster in meets than during fast sets mostly because they get more rest before a race than they do right before a fast set in practice. that's pretty much it. so many girls step up on the blocks during close, high-stakes relays with no sign of fire in their eyes. it's just get up and swim just like in practice.
guys tend to be far more intense and driven to race their tails off than girls. for guys, its not always about posting good times but about beating out the other racer at all costs. balls to the wall. leave it in the pool. all of that.
an epic example is jason lezk's anchor leg on the men's 4x100 free relay in Beijing. you just never see girls get up and race that hard. they may swim fast but they (in general) don't race hard.
so you can keep being better at practice, but we'll be better when it counts.

Nolol,

I agree with you 100%.

"when practice is over, they’ll and moan and whine and complain all the way into the showers where they’ll drag chairs in, sit under the water for half an hour, and continue to and moan and whine"

Ahh... don't you ever make fun of Shower Hour!... it is the best part of practice!
p.s. great article; describes guys/girls swimming to a Tee!
Chris DeSantis posted August 19 at 6:35am.
Dad,

Not entirely random that girls perform superior times in practice. Physiologically, girls are much less anaerobic than boys, particularly during those college years. If you think about the nature of most college practices, a 6000+ yard workout, it makes sense. As events go up in distance, the percentage difference between the fastest woman and fastest man decreases (i.e. way bigger difference from 21.2 to 23.9 in a fifty than 14:34 to 15:42 in a 1500)
So when college athletes perform a long practice, you are really measuring their ability to do a 6000 yard or more swim. The girls will look disproportionately able because the boys anaerobic speed advantage will be negated by the length of the workout. They will suffer far more muscle breakdown because they have far more muscle to break down.
Then lastly factor in drag suits, which can honestly make a 1-2 second difference per 100. Most men wear them and women do not. its pretty easy to see why your female athletes will look better in practice.
Wicoach posted August 19 at 12:22am.
this is pretty much dead on in the realm of averages. however, our boys really train, and only a small percentage of our girls try, because most of them are yammering about whos dating who, and whether lucky jeans are cooler than silver jeans. our boys a lot, but they just like to be difficult. once the set starts they light the pool on fire.
Dsd posted August 18 at 11:14pm.
everyone know's girls are better practicers. girls can easily swim almost race day times in practice every day. I am sure everyone has known some girls who have swam best times in practice. Girls are better practicers...for some weird reason.
Chill posted August 18 at 8:11pm.
it's not meant to be negative or backwards. it's like, if you see a stand-up comic, and they find the little things about a person or group that are funny because they are based in some truth. to take it too seriously would be foolish, but you have to realize that it IS based in truth. it wouldn't get such a positive reception among an audience of swimmers if it was wasn't. so chill.
Tlg posted August 18 at 7:58pm.

Exactly right on with the part about how us boys behave. I mean we like to have fun and joke around. However, I would much rather coach boys than girls, honestly, i think girls complain wayyyy much more than boys, girls create wayyyyy more drama for themselves than we do, and its over the most pathetic of things. Plus, it sucks because girls dont forget anything so if one gets pissed off they'll remember it for like years into the future and bring it up again.

Wow - i am quite surprised. I didn't know it was so easy and acceptable to stereo type...

Maybe later we could do some other stereo typing...perhaps a funny story about how older swimming coaches are stuck in stereo typing the sexes....
oh well...seems like you all like it... I am not filing a protest... just adding...

Now look, guys, I know we're all struggling to find something other than Olympic swimming to transfer our energies to, but I just feel I should point out a couple things before we get the Serbian delegation filing a protest with FINA: These are meant to be humorous observations and I realize that not everyone has the same sense of humor, but it's humor born of 17 years of great affection for the sport and the swimmers described. No offense intended and apologies to any who have been.

Ha, no offense to the other bloggers on this site, but this takes the cake. GREAT POST! But in all fairness, nothing feels better than dragging a chair into the showers and just relaxing. I would like to hear from a females point of view though, although I am sure it won't differ too much.

The one thing that swimmers should understand though, that isn't mentioned, is something I found out at Nationals this year. Your coach, if they are worth anything, enjoys coaching you as long as you are positive. No matter what gender you are, or times you swim, if you are positive and contribute to positive energy during practice/meets, coaches will love you.

ummm...does anyone else think this article is a little...um...sexist..? Does a blog which is supposed to appeal to the spirit of swim really need the line "And then they’ll start ing and moaning and whining and complaining about something new"
This blog feels like it was written in the 1950's.... maybe I am wrong - i don't mind if you call me out on it :) maybe i deserve it :)

Just seems like an inappropriate blog for promoting swim....
