What's your warm-up?

I have long believed that swimming fast is like putting together a puzzle because there are so many variables that affect how fast any person swims in any given race. A short list of those variables might be mindset, warm-up, nutrition, starts, turns, etc. If you read any of my previous posts, you know that I feel strongly and think a lot about nutrition. In contrast, one area in which I feel I have always been lacking is in the area of warming up for races.

I have to be honest—I hate meet warm-ups. There is no room, there are too many bodies in the water, and no one is swimming the same speed or respecting the people in front of them (for all of you who touch the swimmer’s foot in front of you, knock it off you cannot go around!). My best swims have come off of a hot shower warm-up (I went 2:00 in the 200 breast with that warm-up). However, I feel like I am not able to tap into that other gear during my swims, even the best ones.

In the hopes, of this site being somewhat interactive, let me ask you all in floswimmer land some questions. What is your favorite meet warm-up? Do you do it every meet? How long before you race are you warming up?

I like to have plenty of warm up, but going easier than most people would like too, and optimally my favorite is in a diving well like minnesota or iupui. That way i can take my time, relax, do alot of drills all the while staying warm in the water instead of freezing in the meet pool. By the way Brunson, good luck at the meet and give those olympians a run for their money man!

I never had the ball to try the shower routine. Props to you. My problem would be that if it worked I'd do it everytime... I don't think the bulk warmup had much to do with how I swam. It all came down to what I did right before the race. I had to find that easy speed in the warmup pool, and then I could get it right away in the race. Easier said than done though.
Great blog Chris, and shoot me a message 'cause we need to find a way for you to get more of those meet videos up...

I have have a warm-up for you.

I was at a basketball tournament last year and I ran literaly ran through the Aspirus Y to the locker room and by the time I got to the pool my heat was already on the blocks. I ran up to the blocks and dropped 3 seconds in a 50 breast out of nowhere.

I guess it must be just the adrenaline rush.
