Joensen VIdeo

This spring, I've remained faithful in my commitment to bringing you every shred of information I can on the best athlete in Faroese history: Pål Joensen. Since my last writing, there hasn't been much news to report. There will be some summer tune up meets coming soon, but until then, you'll have to live with the fact that I've finally uncovered the video of our intrepid swimmer. For your entertainment, here is my running diary (Bill Simmons style) of watching this 4 minute clip:

:08: Faroese newscasts use cheesy flatscreen backgrounds just like us! Also, that news anchor has one hell of a long name.

:50: Looks to be footage from Belgrade. I'm guess this is the mile judging by the margin of victory.

:56, 1:01: This hand flick on the recovery seems to be the easiest way to pick him out of a crowd in the pool.

1:11: The big question with every swimmer these days: What suit was he wearing? In this case: TYR. I don't understand why TYR hasn't just gotten all the Scandinavian countries on their sponsorship. It just makes sense.

1:21: Now would be a good time to remind everyone that Pål lives in a country with very few sunny days. I hope he wore his SPF Infinity.

1:46: The patented posed photos with medals around the neck. Except way more cheesy this time. I love it.

1:49: Really? They couldn't get a Faroese flag that was half as big as the other flags?

1:55: Choppy underwater shot. Our first look at the stroke.

2:25: No idea what meet this is. Its outdoors so that rules out the Faroes. But he is lapping people.

3:00: He could definitely break 15:00 if he went all the way down on those pullups.

3:28: Pål about 20 seconds and 2 years ago in the 400 free.

3:48: Possible shot of adoring fans imitating the hand flick?

Roll credits. Enjoy!

Thanks for the update! It's always hard to go to LC after swimming for months in a SC pool... You're always waiting for the wall 15 m-s too soon :)
Good luck with your preparations for Rome!

He has a meet in Paris in late june, and we will let that meet decide. As you probably understand, we have not made up our mind just yet, I know this is not perfect, and far from it, but we have no 50m pool in our country, and he just started a training camp in a 50m pool 2 days ago, and I'm afraid it's his first training lcm since last summer. The choice is between 800 and 1500m.
Knowing this, his state of mind is ok, and his preparation will not be to disturbed as if it was between 400 and 1500 :)
He has allmost made the choice, but I cant say what it is :)

Dear Kim

Scandinavia is three countries, who are on the Scandinavian peninsula (acutally there at two of them), the countries are Sweden, Norway and Denmark. The nordic countris on the other hand spans from Finland in the east, to Greeenland in the west, and as you know actually it spans two continets, Europe and North America. The nordic countries are: Finland, Åland (self governing part of Finland) Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Faroe Islands (independet part of the Danish Kingdom), Iceland and Greenland (independet part of the Danish Kingdom).
So its, acutally: Go, Nordic!!

True

I guess 90 percent of his rapid progress at that point came from improving his body line.
There are many things yet to improve on, so he will be a whole lot faster ;)

A "funny" story, there was no flag at all.
This flag they got from Páls little brother. And this is at the European Junior Championships :o)

I thought TYR had found one in showman Amaury Leveaux last november.
For what I remember, the giggly blushing face, the skidding along on the deck and the very enthusiastic comments he made about his suit to French TV France 2 (oh, and do I need to mention about his kiss to journalist Nelson Monfort?) did cause a little tantrum. But I could be wrong... and perhaps the color red on Freddie draws the bull's attention better...
