Swimming Blogs - Garrett McCaffrey

Dear Swimming Fans,

Garrett McCaffrey | Profile
July 7, 2009

If I had written down my ideal first job while growing up, it would've fallen short of the one I actually got.

After graduating with a broadcast journalism degree and 4 years of D1 college swimming, this was my job description: travel around and make videos about the best swimmers and coaches in the world. Here was the objective: do what ever is best for the sport of swimming.

At the time, it was the only job of its kind and it was exactly what our sport needed. Since Floswimming debuted in the fall of 2007, our sport's exposure has increased exponentially. Sure, you can attribute a lot swimming's success to the amazing swimmers and their performances in Beijing, but don't underestimate the value of watching meets like NCSA Junior Nationals or YMCA Nationals on demand. Even meets like Nationals weren't available online before Floswimming. Now, seeing your big meet on the web is more expected than the exception. We are now able to share ideas, personalities, and even practices with a larger audience than we ever imagined. We've come a long way.

For the 2 years I ran Floswimming, I never swayed from the objective. Through blogs, videos, and interviews I tried to make the sport more accessible to the true swimming fan. I don't know that the rest of the world has noticed, but I think we succeeded.

Yet, reality is sometimes a harsh awakening and success on the business side of things isn't always simple. It can make for crappy situations, like the one Floswimming finds itself in on the first day USA's World Championship Trials begin.

As of Monday, July 6th, I no longer work for Floswimming. It's not very easy for me to handle because for 2 years Floswimming has been my life. Disappointment aside, my objective hasn't changed one bit.

I'm writing this blog to you, the swimming fan, to let you know that I still have every intention of putting myself in the best position to help this sport. The last 2 years have been a swimming education that no one could have received through any kind of curriculum. I've seen our sport from all sides and now more than ever it's a burning passion that I can't imagine a living without. I am a swimming enthusiast for life.

Truth be told, I'm still in a state of shock. I have no idea what Floswimming will become now. I don't know what's in store for me. But I do know that swimming is better off today than it was 2 years ago, and I have no regrets for the time I gave over that period.

I guess we're in a place right now where all we can do is keep swimming.

See you on the pool deck...

My daughter is the one that told me Garrett was not on FloSwimming any longer. Too bad - I complained to many events claiming you were better than SwimNetwork, but evidently I was incorrect. Garrett was better than SwimNetwork. Guess I can now delete FloSwimming from my "favorites". Can't wait to follow Garrett on his new career path, which I am sure will far exceed what he did with Flo. Don't expect this site to be up and running much longer!!

To all of you who stand on your soap box and rant all of the negatives truly don't understand swimming or what Garrett brought ot this web site. Most of the inputs outside of Garrett' where boring and un-informed. Garrett actually took the time to meet the kids and teams he was covering and had honest and informed observations. Something this site will sorely miss. What ever you do in the future I'm sure you will be successful. If we can help in any way please contact us - your freinds in the Gulf.

its a shame, if the florianis weren't such dumbasses, the swimming community wouldn't be suffering right now

What exactly did garrett do that was so groundbreaking? He took someone else's internet platform... He took their ideas for Technique Tuesday and WWW from the other FLO sites, and he had good interviews with some top coaches.
I don't doubt that someone can do Garrett's old Job much better than he did. For all of you haters, go follow him on his youtube channel... oh and see how much longer that channel lasts since he doesn't have his own camera or computer or more importantly...he doesn't have the financing to keep up with the travel."

At Least...   July 13, 2009 at 3:31pm
At least he is working on getting video up from WCT. He does not have his own camera, computer or website and is getting information out there. Which is better than this sites developers can say.

As an investor and swimming enthusiast I would be pissed if the very popular and successful face of my website was asked to leave. Bigger and better things my butt. If that were the case they would have had Garrett groom somebody to take his position.
Doubting Garrett's contribution? If you have ever had to do an interview you would understand his talents. Interviews are more than just asking questions and video taping. It is research, endless research which includes talking to coaches of swimmers before you talk to swimmers to find out strengths and weakness and topics to speak about to get good information. Not to mention going to and watching meets, reading results, reading more results...Watch his interview with Beisel, he lets out he spoke to her coach, mother and remembers specifically how OTs went and compares it to WCTs.
Its more than just asking questions and video taping..

dear floswimming investor. Realize this. You probably won't find someone who works as hard as Garrett or that is respected like him. Not everyone just get's to walk into someone's practice and interview a coach while they are coaching. Make no mistake Garrett made this site what is was. You are correct on one issue. Garrett did get his start here, but look at all the posts. I really think people liked what he did and wanted him around. Now you are taking a risk at replacing greatness. you'll probably get lucky with getting just something good.

Floswimming Investor   July 13, 2009 at 9:44am
It seems to me, as a Floswimming investor, that Floswimming has been a springboard for Garrett's dive into his next endeavor. Let's not forget that a lot of us swimming sports enthusiasts would have loved to have been the one who traveled to Bejiing to cover the Olympics, would have loved to have been the one who interviewed passionate coaches from great programs, would have loved to have been the one who felt the pulse, the tension, the elation of swim meets throughout the country.....yes, we would have loved to have been, done, seen and felt all that Garrett experienced. BUT, we were not given that opportunity. Garrett took that opportunity and made of it what he did. Now, because of what Garrett made of those Floswimming opportunities,

As a Floswimming investor, I support the decision to provide someone else with the opportunities that were provided to Garrett....opportunities that us investors believe must continue to be provided for the evolution of a totally dynamic swimming community....i.e., dynamic from the point of view of all administrating events, all coaching and cheering our swimmers on, all designing gear, all dreaming, hoping, and challenging their own limits for the opportunity to achieve a new PR, or to represent ....to represent themselves, to represent their team, to represent their country. Now let's get on the block!!

What a shocker, who is running the site now? Garrett has done an outstanding job with Floswimming over the last 2 years and will be missed tremendously. Good job Garrett, the exposure swimming has now is great and hopefully continues and a fair share of it is because of you and the outstanding effort you put in with Floswimming. I wish you the best of luck and please don't hesitate to call if we, the swimming world, can do anything to help you out. If there is a way to donate money to the Floswimming cause, let us know. I am sure the fans of Floswimming could do some serious damage with donations.

I'm afraid you are going to have to convince someone else to let you cry on their cameras now, we have had enough of you and your little stories and now threats to hurt the swimming public. Looks like Cesar forgot to give a homeless guy a hundred bucks in indy and got beat. or maybe he cut someone off in traffic or took a good parking spot from and old lady. You credited his performance in beijing to good karma. was this slow swim from bad karma? Threats like the one you made to Mark are simply childish, bad for you, and bad for Auburn. I'm blown away at this news and can't believe this is happening. When my team was cut and felt I needed to do something I e-mailed Garrett. I didn't expect to hear from him but I had to do something, Garrett actually replied to my e-mail that night. If it wasn't for Garrett's dedication to the sport no one would have even known about a small DII men's program being cut and the athlete's reactions. When all other media did little to hear us out he gave us the liberty to let the swim community know what had been done. I hope flocasts does something to rectify the situation, because people like Garrett are rare and I don't think this site will ever be the same.

I graduated college a year ago. I was no longer able to keep competing but swimming is not something I wanted to be out of my life. I checked this website daily to see races, workouts, and what was going on with this sport from the top to the bottom. You afforded me, and I'm sure many others, a way to not only stay in touch but to learn about the sport. Your interviews are more genuine then anything we will see on TV. They gave us access to a personal side to the sport that could only be achieved through your knowledge, insight, and creativity.

Can't add much to what has already been said except maybe another thank you, because you have more than earnt it. I had the chance to meet you and even work with you recently when you came up to Montreal, I must say you are very professional, and although I only helped you film and make color commentary on a few races, it helped me understand just how demanding your job was. However, you did not complain, instead you gave it your all - and in my own opinion - treated the job as a duty you owed to your fans, and to the swimming community at large. Well those of us who have grown accustomed to your standard of journalism will never be able to go elsewhere. All the best with your future ventures, and I would be more than happy to help you again in the future.

Thank you for your TIME & WORK: the insights, videos, blogs, broadcast & everything. It was personal, unlike some other channels and it was open for anybody anywhere. I'm really happy that i found the site pretty early it gave me so much good times. It was a daily routine to check the site, look for the new WWW-s, Hawke Talks...

IT WAS ( !WAS! ) the best swimming site on the web ! And it was because of you Garett.
I've just realized today that Garrett has gone, though i was wondering for the last few days or so, why is the site so LAME. Then i found that even lamer, pathetic video of Mark Floreani....for me that means i've done checking floswimming, i'm not interested anymore.
For floswimming losing Garrett is like an OPEN-MOUTH-HEAD-SHOT !
Garrett your journalistic skill is a true gift - not so many people have- !
So Please let us know somehow if you have a new job, site, tv show...

Loved the site and very sad to see you go. I know you were respected by everyone involved in swimming. I even got a comment from Eddie Reese this morning saying how in-tune and knowledgeable about the sport you were and that you were currently running the best site out there. Wish you the best.

Everything that you have done on this site has truly been great and inspiring to anyone that has read or watched it. You will be missed by all of us while you are gone, but I am sure we will all follow you where ever you decide to go. Best of Luck

you are the best. You gave YNats what it needed last year. You gave Cielo and Hawke what they needed. You let Fred get his voice out there. You put up the best workouts (does SwimNetwork even have any?) and let us all have a voice. Good luck with whatever you do next, I just know it will be amazing.

As a middle aged, mediocre but enthusiastic Masters Swimmer, my introduction to Floswimming came when they covered the Masters Nationals in Austin. Never has the 1:03 of a 46 year old 100 IMer sounded more exciting. The magic of Floswimming has been to turn regular folks into real athletes and real athletes into regular folks. Good luck in your future endeavors Garrett

That's okay. It's not like flo is my girlfriend and it actually matters who dumped who first... I don't hold a grudge and I wish floswimming the best of luck.

These are incredible posts. Garrett has done a phenomenal job here at FloSwimming and wherever he goes from here will see those results as well. He has educated me more on the sport of swimming, when i already thought I knew a whole lot. I think in a usual economic climate, there woould be a plethora of jobs available to such a talented, excited, well-spoken and educated young man. Just a brief visit to the other Flocasts and it is obvious the talents that Garrett has are unique. No one else interviews like he does, even on FloSwimming (sorry DeSantis). I hope Garrett finds a great job where he will be valued for the assets he brings to the table.

Quite apart from love for the sport, or hard work, or all the goodwill you've obviously built with swimmers and fans, you have a talent for what you've been doing, so you'll land on your feet, and be better off working at a place that appreciates you. I'm in quite a shock after hearing this news. How could floswimming lose its face (and the voice) so abruptly? If there were only more men and women with the same passion for the sport, the possibilities for swimming would be boundless. Garrett, you made countless swimmers feel awesome- from the Olympic qualifiers you interviewed to the kids you caught on video at meets across the country. I swam my lifetime best at prelims of HS state, and since my parents could only make it to finals, they thought they would never see my lifetime best swim. With your coverage, however, I could show my race not only to my parents (within hours of my swim), but to anyone across the country. Thank you for all that you did for this site. It was a pleasure to meet you at NCSA. Thanks for all of your hard work.

FYI... WMG had nothing to do with this. They completely parted ways with the sport of swimming, as they did not believe they could be financially successful in our world. Swimnetwork is now 100% USA Swimming, who actually have a responsibility to all of us as members to also be financially successful. Otherwise we won't have programs like "make a splash" or be able to send National teams to all corners of the earth or cover your insurance each time you dive in a pool. I am all for the free press and have been a firm believer in this site but vilifying USA Swimming is misguided at best.
Sites across the web are suffering, even the much heralded "Joost" is restructuring because they couldn't compete the way they had been set up... ad rev just isn't there right now as the economy continues to be treacherous.
This isn't the only casualty in our sport. We have multiple post grad Olympic Medalists who are without suit contracts and clubs shutting down in record numbers. As much as our sport has grown in the last 18 months, the dollars have still shrunk.
That said, the loss of Garrett is a very sad one to say the least.

Incredibly disappointed with this news from Garrett today.
As much as we like to believe our beautiful sport of swimming looks after its own - it doesn't always.

I agree with Ande.
An individual like Garrett who has consistently demonstrated the love and passion for the sport with hard work and action will only land in a bigger and much better place.
Garrett - don't loose momentum. Find a way to continue the work you love. And keep all of us in the loop so we know how we can help you now and in the coming months.
You are one of a kind and we can't loose you to political BS.

Garrett,

Judging from all the comments, I'm sure you can easily see how much of a great impact you have made with the swimming community. You have always, ALWAYS had great coverage, and brought to us all the most insightful and cutting edge material, interviews and www's in our sport. Like most all of us, I'm shocked and greatly saddened by the sudden news of your departure, and if there is anything we can do to help, I'm sure we would all like to do whatever we can! You've been first class about everything you've done the last two years, and the swimming community will truly, truly miss you!
Start up your own company, Garrett! You would make it AWESOME my friend!
All my best, and you're in my prayers, Garrett.

If you don't like the direction of the sport, become involved. There are many ways to affect change besides anonymous internet comments. I agree that Garrett provided us a valuable service, and I can guarantee nobody wants to silence such an outspoken supporter of our sport. Duuuude, this sucks and SwimNetwork sucks even more. I really looked forward to WWW.
It's hard to believe that this would happen, especially because there seems to be so much support from around the world for this site from highly respectable and reputable swimmers, coaches, clubs, and NCAA teams.
But I guess that is what happens in this increasingly monopolized world of entities that are simply too big to fail...everything just gets watered down and polished so much that it looses all content.
Even though we don't know all of the ins and outs about what happened or came about it's hard not to suspect a rat.
Garrett, thanks for all you have done. I wish you the best of luck buddy, and I hope we can all hear from you again SOON.

Garrett, from a selfish standpoint, for myself and all the readership/participants of floswimming, this is VERY SAD news. You have raised the bar so far above the standard "dumbed-down media" that this is a huge loss for us and for floswimming. There is nothing out there that even comes close to what you have contributed to the interest, knowledge base, and great coverage in the world of swimming. And for that, I thank you from my heart. This change presents an opportunity - doors open, doors close, others open. Something better will certainly come your way. Do you need us to kick into high gear a rallying cry for reinstatement - such as you instigated for the ASU swimming program? I'm sure there is plenty of support for that, if that is what you want. Let's us know what your next "dream job" will be and how we can help. Thanks again for all your insight and energy.

It can not be said enough; it's a very sad day for swimming, Garrett EVERYTHING you did for this wonderful site was incredible, Floswimming was and hopefully still will be my favorite thing to do outside of the sport. As we are all Floswimming fans you must tell us what the circumstances are, I mean what will happen to the Flo now? And in the future? If this problem is money related we can fix that, we saved Arizona right? If this is a power struggle between the Flo and the Swimming powers there has to be a way through this, the coverage you and this site brings is ten-fold better than anything else out there and there can not be a problem with providing great coverage. But once again, I can not thank you enough, Floswimming has been every swimmers dream come true, I love this site so much and I really hope this is something that can be worked through.

This has been my favorite video forever and Garrett made it happen; http://www.floswimming.org/videos/coverage/view_video/234382/95734

I don't know the specifics of what has happened regarding you or the site in the past few days but I believe that you no longer working for floswimming will deal a great loss to our sport and fans of it. I was first shown floswimming by my coach two years ago when the only workout on here was the Texas workout where Ricky Berens went 2:34 for a 300 free and i became addicted to this site from that moment on! I mean addicted as in checking this site 10, 15 times daily! I'm not sure this is entirely correct. If WMG is no longer with USA Swimming, that means that USA Swimming is doing all of the media themselves through the National Governing Body (NBG). So, it would seem that if Garrett and Floswimming aren't allowed to do anything with Trials this week that it is because they are competing with Swim Network, which is run by USA Swimming. Chris if you can reply this, please correct me if I am wrong.

Garrett won't say it, but I will: what happened here was not right. He deserves better for the hard work he's put into this site over two years. I had the pleasure of joining him for some coverages. Garrett is the genuine article- he cares so much about swimming and doing something for the people in this sport. He barely took a few days off over two years to make this site what it is. Even then, I know he had a dream for it becoming much more.
