The Trials have begun!

Well, Trials has finally started, and I am loving it! So far, it's been an amazing meet, and we're only halfway through the second day. There has been some very fast swimming - three world records in the last 24 hours already, and probably more to come tonight! As expected, the showdown between Phelps and Lochte was very exciting, and reminded me of watching Phelps first break that record back in Ft. Lauderdale in 2002 - except that time it was Erik Vendt who dipped under the world record with him. Back then, I think Phelps went 4:11 something, to… more »

Putting the puzzle together

Putting the puzzle together:In my last post, I had talked about a race I was getting ready for... Well, that race was about three weeks ago, and it went well. It was amazing, I felt like before that race I wasn't sure that I was quite ready for Trials yet, but after getting out and attacking that race, and going less than a half second off my best in the 100 free, a switch flipped, and I was then ready for the meet, which is now next week already! After that meet, I had great practices the following week, and… more »

Are you up to the challenge?

I have been terribly busy lately, and haven't had the time to write a new post in a while, but I've been meaning to... I had a meet a week ago, where I swam just the 50 and the 100 free. This was just a small meet at my home pool, so it was no big deal, right? Well, not really. Not that how I did this weekend is going to define my swimming career or anything, but this meet was pretty important. It was important, because I was using it as preparation for Olympic Trials, which is now less… more »

Just relax...

Well, there's no more snow on the ground, and here in Wisconsin, that can mean only one thing: summer is very near. And as summer approaches, so does Olympic Trials. After all the record setting swims in the last couple months, you can feel the excitement in the air... or I should say, in the pool. From the people who are going to be following the results at home, to those looking forward to just swimming in the meet, to those who plan on re-breaking some of those records, there is a lot of built-up excitement and tension that I… more »

Overcoming Adversity

This past weekend I went to watch paralympic trials in Minneapolis, which really was a pretty awesome event to watch. I knew four people swimming in the meet, all of different levels of experience, so I decided to go and watch, and offer some support. I was blown away by what I saw. Many swimmers have overcome setbacks in their careers, but I'm sure very few can compare to the adversity that these swimmers have overcome in their careers, and in their lives.

Last fall I met Melissa Stockwell at the Big Shoulders Open Water swim… more »

Swimming with the best...

So it has been a while since my last post, but I have been busy! Two weekends ago, I went down to Austin for the American Long Course Championships, and I had a blast. I rested for about three days, and had a slow start, but finished the meet with a best time in the 100 free. Dropping two tenths was cool, but the best part about it was that I was not fully tapered for it, which hopefully means I'll swim faster this summer when I am!

The Working (and Swimming) Man

Hi, my name is Josh, and I work full time. Oh yeah, and I swim full time too. By "swim full time", I mean train as much as I can around a 40 hour/week job. I am currently training for Olympic Trials this summer, and I'm trying to squeeze in as much quality training as I can before then. I am 25 years old, and for the past three and a half years, I've been keeping this crazy schedule of working 8-9 hour days, going to swim practice for about 2 hours, lifting weights for about an hour (three times… more »
