A wise man told me that the only things that has-beens have left are words… to that I heard the response: all that the never-weres have left are blogs...That said, I love what Floswimming has done to the world of swimming information and I say that having positive relationships with others in the space who may or may not be Floswimming fans and having sat on the board of Swimnetwork LLC as an Ex-Officio member just 3 months ago. This site has provided a venue for a new depth of conversation and information in the sport of swimming. The video content… more »

Tech Suits... Socialism in Swimming?

This weekend I was around a lot of swimming people and as you would expect the hallway/water cooler conversation often gravitated to swim suits and their impact so far, their likely impact on the Rome World Championships and the lasting effect on our sport. The way I see it, prior to this quantum leap in suit technology, competitive swimming existed as a free market where superior products succeeded because of the elements that were put into them. The swimmer who was best prepared mentally, physically and technically would finish victorious just as the free market believes the best designed and priced… more »

Staying healthy - should retired swimmers get back in the pool?

So it has been a while since I have written but previously I wrote about how I thought I was cool when I swam and now that I don’t, I realize how truly uncool I was then and I guess continue to be. In that post I touched on changes in my caloric consumption and the amount and kind of exercise I now get… I think this topic deserves a little more discussion.Swimming puts a person in a health bubble. Or at least it put me in one. I never had to learn to say no to seconds or recognize… more »

shower time with trent

For as long as I can remember I have had a lot of super random and probably crazy ideas about swimming bumping around inside my skull. The randomness/craziness I can either blame or thank my parents for because of the freethinking they taught my sisters and me to do while home schooling (material for later, no doubt). Since retiring from swimming, though, I have found that the shower is the place where I have the most clarity and can best focus/harness my thoughts. Not to psychoanalyze why but there is probably something to the water moving across my body, getting… more »

Swimmer vs Ex-Swimmer...

So my last entry was pretty serious and all that so this time I thought I would have a little more fun and get in to some of my musings… Typically swimmers, unless their initials are MP and they have enough Gold to jumpstart the US economy, are not really thought of as being all that, hmmm, how should I say… “cool” beyond our wet world. Case in point, Aquaman. This un-caped crusader has yet to have a major Hollywood movie made of his heroism, yet his far more dry (yes, that is a pun – think about it) Justice… more »

Swimming means more than just laps in a pool to me...

If you know me, it won’t surprise you that my story starts with a girl… it was a teenage crush I had back in Portland, Oregon in the 90s (awww how cute). I was totally gaga for this girl from my team’s rival club and looking for any, and every, opportunity to be around her because we were both pretty shy and I was far from a ladies man. I truly believed, in a totally Dawson’s Creek or maybe today it would be a Gossip Girl sort of way, that given a chance with her my life would be changed… more »

BEAN

Having swum together at King Aquatics and knowing that I went to SC, Garrett asked that I write a piece in response to a certain video on Floswimming that was captured at the Missouri Grand Prix. In this video it is alleged that several well known swimmers are engaged in a game called “Bean”. I am not here to comment on what is happening in the clip or to implicate anyone for playing, but I am more than happy to discuss the Bean phenomenon.

To me, Bean is perhaps best described as a martial art. According to… more »
