Counties 2009.

Kaitlyn Utkewicz | Profile
January 30, 2009

Well, I'm sitting here contemplating what tomorrow's going to bring. Counties 2009. The past two years I was disappointed with the results mainly because there was something that went wrong in a race. Freshman Year- 200 Free, 100 Fly. Not a banner day for me - I was young, naive, and probably too intimidated to cause any real damage at a high school county meet. Though the best hightlight was our relay with Lauren English coming in first place. That's a race I will never forget for a long time. Sophomore Year- 50 Free, 100 Free. I was so obsessed… more »

Has anyone seen that infiniti Commercial with the swimmer? Theres one with a diver too? They shouldve used Phelps and Dumais? You know, kind of keep the exposure of swimming going. I feel like they used swimming cause it was popular but then just got some actor to do the butterfly. Im just saying. more »

My thoughts....

Does anyone feel like this was the fastest season ever. Does anyone feel like time is barrelling ahead at an uncontrollable rate. Does anyone just want to yell to the heaves, "Please, PLEASE, slow down!" Well, I do. Here I am, about ready to head over to Missouri for my third Missouri Grand Prix. I can't believe that I've been to three. It seems like just yesterday that I was a stupid freshman walking around the Mizzou Rec Center dropping dozens of seconds.... and taking it for granted. more »

KEEPING THE MOMENTUM POST-OLYMPIC COMPETITIONS

I. M. ALLEYNE-DASNEVES | Profile
January 30, 2009

Now that the Beijing Olympic competitions have closed, the work toward finding ways to get children to be encouraged and taught to swim as part of education programs around the country and also abroad should be continued. Many take for granted that living in an area or country that is surrounded with water or coastal sections somehow creates natural swimmers by proximity. Even in this broad brush of economic hard times on a global scale, extending a continuous invitation through public service announcements on water safety would inform people to the fact that swimming is an indoor activity that can… more »

Year of the Ox: On the Road to Damascus

Jeff Gustavson | Profile
January 26, 2009

"I'd like to see Jesus and Mohammad on the road to Damascus today What do you think they might say? Would they fight with arrows clenched in their teeth, like Jews and Arabs today? Or would they walk and speak, like philosophers and thinkers?" - Paul Kantner You can't live in SF and not know that today is the beginning of the lunar new year (City College has the day off in its honor), But did you also know it is the celebration of the conversion of Paul on the road to Damascus? 44: Did Obama's speechwriter watch QAF?

Jeff Gustavson | Profile
January 20, 2009

So, I made it back here to DC for the inauguation. The most important line to me in his inauguration speech was something about a renewed respect for science. But the most quoted line today was something about picking yourself back up and dusting yourself back off. Now, Emmett, in QAF (set in Pittsburgh, where I grew up) talking about Justin Taylor: "Justin's picked himself back up and dusted himself off..." In other Pittsburgh-set drama news, Jared Leto, who starrred with the woman who Meryl Streep termed "the incomprable Claire Danes" in the teen drama "My So-called Life", filmed a… more »

I'm finding it easier and easier to push myself harder at practice. That sounds like an oxymoron but it totally applies. We had a hard set today that at this time last year, I would've looked at it and completely given up. But I actually did really well with it, not exactly where Keira wanted me, but within a second of it. I definitely look forward to going practice now. Each day is different - you never know what to expect and there's always something new to learn. I feel like there's something different about this year. A new attitude… more »

Don't Turn Your Back On Me: I WON

Jeff Gustavson | Profile
January 18, 2009

So, earlier this week, I went to see Yoko Ono at Stanford University, parked my car, a 2007 KIA Spectra, and couldn't remember where I parked the thing. So after Yoko's pathetic attempt at art, she was takin' questions. After, patiently waiting for my chance, the guy who was with her cut the questions off. I had dinner at McDonald's. Since I couldn't find my car, I wandered Stanford for two days with nothing to eat nor any money, I decided to hitchhike back to SF. I got picked up by a nice guy who was on his way to clean Mike's… more »

BBs for the PVST meet

Ted Huntington | Profile
January 13, 2009

My apologies for the tardy breakfast burrito blog re: the PVST meet, Jan. 10-11. On Saturday I purchased the "meat lovers" sausage and bacon BB from the vendor. Mmm, mmm, good! Just the right amount of potatoes and eggs -- and an extra-yummy heaping of sausage chunks (note -- not BITS, but CHUNKS) and crispy bacon (none of those lard-filled bacon slices, either -- the perfectly crispy variety). The meat was spread throughout the BB, from top to bottom. I did not have one moutful of tortilla-sans-meat throughout the entire BB. Made the mistake on Sunday of buying the Chronic… more »

A Reply to the Blog Entry: Champions at Practice by John Doe

George Kelly | Profile
January 8, 2009

I have been struggling with the concept of commenting about this Blog Post when I came across it yesterday. I initially felt that the person who wrote it was so far off base in their thinking that it doesn't deserve a reply. However, in the best interest of my own swimmers, I think a response from a coach is needed for this Entry. Throughout my years of swimming and coaching I have come across many men (and women) who have the same problem as John Doe. They are naturally talented swimmers, but personally they are mentally and emotionally weak people.… more »

Jeff Gustavson | Profile

This past October, I went to see the documentary Dream of Life about rocker/poetess Patti Smith. It was less of a traditional documentary and more of a visual collage of her life in the ten years following her husband Fred "Sonic" Smith's premature death. One of the more interesting sequences was her visiting her parents in her childhood home in Southwestern New Jersey. As my parents now live in New Jersey, I felt like I could relate. Although I was born, given up for adoption and adopted at six months of age in Pittsburgh, PA, my parents are both from… more »

LHY Time Trials Day 2

Kaitlyn Utkewicz | Profile
January 4, 2009

Let's just say having an entire week of doubles before competing doesn't do much for your times. I don't think anyone got best times today... well, except for that ten year old that keeps breaking team records left and right. I added 2 seconds in each of my events. My coach keeps telling me that I can't be afraid of the 500, that I could be so much faster. Which, I agree with because I shouldn't be going 5:38 if my 100 is sub 54. I just don't know how to swim the race. Heck, I don't even know how… more »

LHY Time Trials Day 1

Kaitlyn Utkewicz | Profile

I definitely think swimming is all about your mental attitude towards the race. If you psych yourself out, there's no way you're going to get the results you want. Today for example, I was nervous as anything for my 400 IM. I ended up adding 6 seconds. I have an issue with taking things out too fast and dying. I guess it's the sprinter in me. My 200 fly, on the other hand, was great. I didn't think about it too much and just decided to swim. I got my best time by 2 seconds (2:20.77) I was really happy… more »
