Phelps Phan

It's pretty obvious that many of the American Olympic swimmers are more than a little resentful of Michael's success and the media attention he commands. And it's not hard to see why. They earned their chance in the spotlight on the world stage, but feel like they are eclipsed by the huge shadow cast by Phelps' celebrity. It's not his fault. On the contrary, I don't think Phelps gets enough credit. There are lots of qualities I admire in Michael. In fact, I think his best and most important traits go almost unnoticed. In an earlier blog I talked about… more »

The start of 09

May 29, 2009 I have been swimming for quite a while now. Almost all of the years I could, I did. Schools been out for 2 days now and my first practice of the summer was last night. But, Coach K was talking to the parents most the time, so we pretty much messed around for the whole time. All we had to do was a 200, and a 300. It wasn't hard. In fact, I passed someone, and then I kept touching someone's feet. And I wasn't even trying hard, and I was faster than the others on my… more »

Who makes whom?

Does the athlete make the coach or the coach make the athlete or is it a combination of both? There has been a battle of minds to determine this just as the question of chicken vs. egg situation. It has a little less complication than that but still needs to be looked at. Most people would say that it is a combination of both in which I agree, but to what extent?      I have heard from numerous places that most swimmers tend to do better in school. Maybe it is the qualities they have learned from swimming, like… more »

A New Season for Resilience and Reinvigoration

Andrew Cipriano | Profile
May 25, 2009

The long course swim session has begun and our team is differently dynamic with many new swimmers coming and a few leaving or choosing to do other things with their summers. Now is a time for reinvigoration from both coaches and athletes. The post by Chris DeSantis on resilience shows how people need to overcome the odds against them and win. All coaches have seen resilience in their swimmers whether it is from their athletes not wanting to be there or others that show problems to the program. This is where the reinvigoration needs to come into play for the… more »

Why I Love My Suit

David Guthrie | Profile
May 22, 2009

One overlooked aspect of the tech suit revolution is that body suits allow swimmers to race faster all season without shaving down. The training model of a sin wave with long deep troughs of fatigue with brief sharp peaks twice a year is not the best recipe for performance. It is far better to develop speed, strength, and conditioning year round than to dig a deep hole and hope that you can climb out of it in time for that one shot at going fast. Without body suits, swimmers with very much body hair (like me) have the option of… more »

3. Blog Fail?

I love Floswimming but blogging here is such a hassle because my friends (swimmer's and non-swimmer's alike) just read my "regular" blog. Tumblr, Blogspot, Wordpress- got 'em covered. Floswimming? Not as...visible? Plus I write about such mundane things here, it's not even interesting! Look at me, zinging myself. Anyway, headed to San Antonio this weekend and SUPER excited. It's a 3-day weekend and a few of the Jersey peeps are flying down (Andrew, Nick, Chris). I've been working out/swimming so much that this weekend could put all that hard work down the drain... hah. If possible I would LOVE to… more »

Great to be on Floswimming. I spend my time thinking about swimming stats and worrying the USA will only win 3 golds in Rome. Check out my preview of the Charlotte Ultra-Swim at swimnetwork.com and my blog, DR549. more »

Swimming in Syrup: Nathan Adrian on Mythbusters, Already Busted SPOILER

Eric Teske | Profile
May 6, 2009

Tonight, a Mythbusters episode will air that reportedly tests the effects of swimming in syrup - with the help of Olympic gold medalist Nathan Adrian. The myth is based on the physics of swimming in a highly viscous medium where, while you are slowed by more drag, your strokes are also more effective at pulling you forward. In theory the two effects should cancel each other out. This same theory was tested in a 2003 study by Ed Cussler, a professor of chemical engineering and materials science at the University of Minnesota, and his student Brian Gettelfinger. According to an… more »

Don't play around

For all of those that know me, you know how much i hate not being able to swim. Having this broken arm is no treat for me. I mean yeah sure, the pain meds are pretty sweet, the nurses that took my x-rays were dead sexy, but the one thing that most of us would agree is the worse part about broken limbs. Is that the doctor says not to swim. It's really going to suck not being able to get the water. I can't even enjoy a shower lol. The point of me saying all this is to show… more »

Competing with Acive, Untreated Pneumonia & a Fractured Wrist

Two weeks ago, I swam in the Pacif Masters Short Couse Yards championships, and my times were absolutely horrible…I chalked it up to too few times @ practice since my birthday (January 10th). I missed my flight returning from the East Coast and therefore missed Friday’s events (the 1650 and 200 freestyle). On Saturday I swam the 500 free and 50 fly. For the first time in my life, I vomited after an event…the 50 fly. I thought perhaps it was just too much Coca-cola. Later, I convinced myself that I had pulled an abdominal muscle, but decided that I… more »

Well with the NFL draft last week it got the gears in my brain turning a bit and got me wondering what if there was a professional swim league. NSL? I think it could work and based on the popularity of this site there could be enough fans to support it. There could be to start out about 8 teams in the league and a draft could be done with everyone american to start. Obviuosly Phelps would go #1 and Lockte 2. The rest of the draft would be interesting b/c you would see if you want sprinters, distance, IMers,… more »
