Lesson 10/30

Jenna Powell | Profile
October 30, 2008

Today I worked on butterfly & a little bit of breast stroke. For butterfly, I need to make sure my shoulders are touching my ears and when I come up for a breath going forward, not up and down. For both breast and fly, I worked on the breakout stroke. In the breakout stroke I worked on not coming up so high and keeping eyes down. more »

Age Group Swimmers and a Snorkel

Becky Bertuzzi | Profile
October 29, 2008

I started practices on Saturdays for some of my more dedicated kids, calling it the Elite Group practice. I required all of them to purchase swimmer's snorkels so that they could concentrate on other aspects of their strokes (like rotating properly, since none of them do that very well). My kids are in middle school, so 11-14 year olds. So, the first set on Saturday is the snorkel set. Lots of 25s to start with to get them to learn to breathe through it. Then some 25s from mid pool to have them figure out how in the heck they're… more »

October 28, 2008

A new habit I have developed, other than actually 'putting out' (navy term for working hard) in practice, is to grade myself on a scale of 1 to 5 on how much effort I put into work out. Because of previous years of degrading habits, I had swum last year against the coaches, that is everything they said, every set, I wanted to stick it to them. If they thought I would swim well, I would swim terribly, if they thought it was too much for me to handle....then I would actually swim ok. But on the whole I developed… more »

Uploading Video

Shari Twidwell | Profile
October 28, 2008

I knew I was in trouble last year when I tried to edit some video off my cool new mini-DVD video camera. The process was a nightmare I never want to relive, and I barely wound up getting what I wanted after hours of sweat and swearing. I have a system down, now, for getting video through that sodding camera to the laptop when we do on-deck video work. I am very proud of that system. I decided it would be cool to post our C1 group practices here alongside video of the practice. So, I charged up the camera,… more »

The Art of the Deck Change

The Screaming Viking ! | Profile
October 22, 2008

Okay boys and girls. Listen up! The deck change is an art… but it is an art that requires great skill. If you are not practiced in the art of the deck change, FOR CRYIN OUT LOUD DON’T DO ONE! Some of us are tired of getting flashed by inexperienced rookies! If you need a friend to hold up a towel for you to block spectator viewing, you have no business changing on deck. The locker room is not miles away, and a deck change is not a two person job! If your racing suit is so tight that you… more »

The Screaming Viking!'s top 5 reasons why swimming is better than ever.

The Screaming Viking ! | Profile
October 16, 2008

Here are The Screaming Viking!'s top 5 reasons why swimming is better now than it was back when I was an athlete: (1983-1996 for those who are curious.) 5. THE SHIFT IN THE FOCUS OF TRAINING: There are a lot of kids who were scared away from our sport by the training back in the day. I certainly won’t say that the days of mega-yardage are gone, (not by a long shot,) but coaches from D1 college programs all the way down to the summer leagues are focusing differently. Core strength, balance, stability, explosiveness, stroke rate… these were buzz words… more »
