Florida - First two days

December 31, 2008 at 7:05pm
We arrived on December 29th around 10:30am to warmer than usual temperatures, around 86 degrees. As usual, there was a wait to get into our rooms but no matter, most went right to the beach. That afternoon we walked over to the Hall of Fame Pool (HOF) for our first long course practice; the 50 meter pool sure is long. We did quite a bit of kicking, so you may have already heard. Once they all managed the 1 mile walk back to the hotel, we went to the grocery store, in a bus, yes a bus; the store loves seeing us coming. So, you might think we might have some small injuries from all the swimming we do here. Well, our first injury was a shopping cart incident, one of the swimmers ran their foot over with the cart; their own foot. We are quite certain she will manage to pull through. Our second day was a full day with short course practice in the morning at (Stranahan) a local high school pool. Conditions were perfect, sunny and in the low 70's with the water a nice 79 degrees. After swim practice we did our dryland which involved core exercises that a couple of our swimmers learned in class this past fall at OWU. Good workout, I must say. Once back at the hotel, much of the team was once again headed to the beach, tough life. In the afternoon we made the 1 mile walk to the HOF for our long course practice, once all said and done they swam 10,000 yards for the day. This morning, December 31st, started at the short course pool for our meet warm-up. After about an hour of swimming we got back on the bus and headed to the HOF pool for the anual Ed Kennedy meet. This is a good meet being all relays, especially with many of the team never competing long course meters before. Thay all swam well considering how tired they are from the first three practices. The men won the 150 meter breaststroke relay. After the meet we were given lunch, some 14 pizzas, which did not last the day. We returned to the HOF for afternoon practice, a practice of fate. The sets were all dictated by the draw of a card. It was a fairly simple practice that ended witha 2009 foot warm down ( 612meters). Happy New Years to all!
