Husky Invite Preview, by Darren Grose
Here are a few things I am looking forward to during this weekend's meet in scenic Federal Way, Washington.
First, the obvious. This is a mid-season invite, the taper meet for most, if not all participating teams. So we will be seeing some fast swimming (especially if swimmers are equipped in the ever controverial LZR and its ilk). Looking at the psyche sheet, a number of swimmers have already acheived A or B cuts. Look for a lot more to throw their names into the race to beat the line this weekend.
Olympians. Husky invite will feature a few, most notably Cal's Nathan Adrian, a gold medalist in the 400 free relay in Beijing (and a native of Bremerton, WA), and 200 breast world record holder Rebecca Soni of USC, whose gold medal swim in that event was one of the biggest upsets of the '08 Games.
The meet will feature four teams ranked in the top 25 for their division, those being 11th ranked Cal on the mens side, and on the women's side, UW and USC, who are ranked 24th and 25th, respectively (the Cal women will be at the Georgia Invitational this weekend). In addition, the Lady Pirates of Whitworth University of Spokane, WA are ranked 21st in Division 3. Besides the afformentioned teams, Boise State, Hawaii, NC State, UC Davis, UCSB, University of Puget Sound, Oregon State (women), Seattle U and the University of British Columbia will be competing.
Seattle University, a traditional D2 power, is in it's first year in transition to Division 1. This will be their first big meet as a D1 program. Best of luck to the Redhawks!
The Husky Swim team is entering the third year of the Whitney Hite era. Hite led the Husky women to their highest ever placing (12th) at NCAAs this past year, and both the men's and women's teams are looking strong. Good luck to the Dawgs, and all the other participating schools!
Unfortunately we won't be able to bring you any of the meet's preliminary sessions, but we should have each finals session posted soon after their completion. This is my first ever coverage, so I apologize in advance for any inaccuracies, flubs, mistakes or banal observations I make in my commentary. Have any advice or suggestions? Any burning questions you wish you could ask the swimmers or coaches but can't because you are watching the meet from North Dakota? Just leave a comment. This is looking to be a great meet, and I hope you are excited to watch it as I am.
