It's Michael Phelp's first meet back since his legendary 2008 Olympics, and Fred Bousquet's first meet back since he set the World Record in the 50 Free at French Nationals. Not to mention it's annually one of the best meets of the summer swimming schedule. Check out last year's coverage: Ryan Lochte at the 2008 UltraSwim

News & Updates

Gut Check for Team USA by Floswimming Senior Writer Chris DeSantis

The lead story of the Charlotte Ultraswim will be the return of Michael Phelps, but I'm watching a different story. For the second year in a row, America's top swimming athletes must respond to a barrage of world leading times from the rest of the world. I think we can all agree that they aquitted themselves quite well last year, but the competition is much steeper in '09 than it was in '08.

One look at the world rankings is enough to make your heart race a little. America has less than a dozen swimmers ranked in the top 10 across all strokes and distances for both men and women. And unlike last year, when we could await the unleashing of all our best swimmers in Omaha, I think we can all agree that if Team USA will step up to the plate once again it will take some fresh blood.

Last year the US men could count on having arguably the world's best breaststroker (Hansen), the best backstroke tandem (Peirsol and Lochte) and the world record holder in the 100 fly (Ian Crocker). This year? Hansen is on sabbatical mulling his future, while Peirsol and Lochte now face a powerful duo from Japan. You could argue that Phelps will hold the fort in butterfly (I won't bet against you), but Munoz and Cavic will likely be breathing down his neck.

What about sprint freestyles? France has only gotten better since their razor thin defeat. Australia appears to have reloaded. South Africa looks frisky again as they emerge from the Dirk Lange debacle. Can Adrian and Feigen step to the forefront?

Questions abound for the women as well. Right now we have no women in the top 25 in the breaststroke- at all. Expect Rebecca Soni to change that. Still, their sprinting core has just as many, if not more, unresolved questions than the men. Will they be able to count on Dagny Knutson to sustain her momentum and ascend to stardom? Will Elizabeth Beisel be the next Katie Hoff (or better)?

The questions start getting answers this weekend.

What's the deal with Hoff and the all-freestyle program? Is she done with the IMs for good? That's kind of a bummer for her to quit the IMs. That's what got her on the map. I don't think she'll have the same success in all-free Worlds. There's no way she's going to win the 200 FR in Rome, and the 400 and 800 are longshots. She'd still have a better shot in the IMs.

Hey Garrett - ever thought about writing ESPN and asking them if you could cover a Phelps meet for them? With Phelps being the phenom he is and getting the press he is, they need to have someone who knows what they are talking about to cover it. I am not sure who that dude was they sent, but I doubt he knows what butterfly is. We (the swimming community) should request that if they are going to cover these events, they should think about putting a swimming person in charge of the coverage. At least NBC has Rowdy doing their thing for them.

I stand corrected. I see Bousquet's name in the FINA record books as a world record holder in the short course 4x100m free relay. Am I missing something else? The pending record, I guess... My fault. I didn't write that Bousquet had no Olympic hardware. I wrote that he had no Olympic gold.

At any rate, I still find the statement that Phelps is "definitely no bousquet, nor ever will be," comical in the context of swimming history.

Yeah its crack. Everyone around the world is swimming faster than us. Also did you see Aus. beat the sh*t out of USA Women last summer? Japan broke 200 back and I would love to see that 19yr old kid can do in the 100m. Japan broke the breast (or should I say Brendan Hansen) Sprinting is chillIng in France and Australia NO WHERE NEAR USA!. Some dude from Italy matched MP time in beijing for the butterfly.

I wouldn't count on us Americans stepping it up too big at this meet. With World Champ Trials still a ways away no one is rested right now. And not many Americans train the way those frenchies do so can't go lightning fast in season. America's firepower won't come out till early july, you can take that to the bank.

oh, and i got ricky berens making the worlds team in at least two events come july.

USA Has Something To Prove?   May 14, 2009 at 6:31pm
In what way shape or form does the USA have something to prove. Check out our medal counts, etc. What can the French do well? Sprint. What else? Put our squad against the rest of the world and we still dominate. The USA has nothing to prove. Everyone else is still chasing the red white & blue (with or without bong in hand).

About Bousquet I think it's ridiculous to say MP has stolen his technique since we know what MP and bowman have done in this sport!
I'm French and i support the french team but i can say that swimmers of others country are good if they are!
It is pity to see how we can damage links between country with reflections which do not even deserve to be raised.

For some reason, I find this sentence funny. Most people would phrase it the other way around -- Bousquet is no Phelps, nor will he ever be. With Phelps' seven world records to Bousquet's zero, and 14 career Olympic gold medals compared to Bousquet's zero, somehow it makes more sense to write it my way. But yeah, Freddy might beat Michael at the UltraSwim.

As for Chris' blog, yeah, the Americans will have to answer the rest of the world like they had to last year and in years past. Keep in mind the two biggest meets are yet to come for the Americans -- world trials and worlds themselves. My guess is that the USA will remain more than competitive if not on top. They seem to answer the call year after year. I see it being a little down this year at worlds, much like in 2001, but I predict the U.S. will still lead the medal count at worlds.
