It's Michael Phelp's first meet back since his legendary 2008 Olympics, and Fred Bousquet's first meet back since he set the World Record in the 50 Free at French Nationals. Not to mention it's annually one of the best meets of the summer swimming schedule. Check out last year's coverage: Ryan Lochte at the 2008 UltraSwim
Gut Check for Team USA by Floswimming Senior Writer Chris DeSantis
The lead story of the Charlotte Ultraswim will be the return of Michael Phelps, but I'm watching a different story. For the second year in a row, America's top swimming athletes must respond to a barrage of world leading times from the rest of the world. I think we can all agree that they aquitted themselves quite well last year, but the competition is much steeper in '09 than it was in '08.
One look at the world rankings is enough to make your heart race a little. America has less than a dozen swimmers ranked in the top 10 across all strokes and distances for both men and women. And unlike last year, when we could await the unleashing of all our best swimmers in Omaha, I think we can all agree that if Team USA will step up to the plate once again it will take some fresh blood.
Last year the US men could count on having arguably the world's best breaststroker (Hansen), the best backstroke tandem (Peirsol and Lochte) and the world record holder in the 100 fly (Ian Crocker). This year? Hansen is on sabbatical mulling his future, while Peirsol and Lochte now face a powerful duo from Japan. You could argue that Phelps will hold the fort in butterfly (I won't bet against you), but Munoz and Cavic will likely be breathing down his neck.
What about sprint freestyles? France has only gotten better since their razor thin defeat. Australia appears to have reloaded. South Africa looks frisky again as they emerge from the Dirk Lange debacle. Can Adrian and Feigen step to the forefront?
Questions abound for the women as well. Right now we have no women in the top 25 in the breaststroke- at all. Expect Rebecca Soni to change that. Still, their sprinting core has just as many, if not more, unresolved questions than the men. Will they be able to count on Dagny Knutson to sustain her momentum and ascend to stardom? Will Elizabeth Beisel be the next Katie Hoff (or better)?
The questions start getting answers this weekend.

good question, usually everyone takes time off after the olympics, but for whatever reason most swimmers didnt. could be the new innovations in suits have kept people swimming fast so most saw no reason to stop. who knows though. but if i had to bet, the US will be ready come Rome to swim fast
the reason there hasnt been a big meet earlier than may is because the year after the olympics is usually an off year. most athletes take a few months off so having a big meet earlier than may would be worthless.
At any rate, I still find the statement that Phelps is "definitely no bousquet, nor ever will be," comical in the context of swimming history.
yourdumb, your an idiot. my point is that no s**t everyone else is going to be swimming faster than the Americans right now because they havent had a big meet to bust out some fast times at. I thought that would be pretty easy to realize, I guess not though. and if you truly believe that the Americans are screwed and are going to cease to exist as a swimming superpower, than you either know nothing about swimming or you are extremely ed
" at 80% michael is still better then any swimmer in the world " ....
well at least in Canada we alphabetizer our movie stores.
Tempers are flaring, people are obviously nervous about americans stepping up, if you have any doubts i would suggest you rent a copy of the Bejing Olympics from blockbuster its located in the section between Rocky and Highlander
I said 'Merica!!!!!!!!!!!!
I said 'Merica!!!!!!!!!!!!
yea but all the other countries have had their world champ trials, which everyone was obviously shaved and tapered for. the US hasn't, in fact this is the first big meet that most of the Americans are swimming in since Beijing.
Done after MP? Are you smoking crack? Phelps won 8 medals in o8, but I don't think we only won 8 as a squad. But maybe I am wrong. Have we ever been dominated in swimming?
Still think I am smoking crack?
oh, and i got ricky berens making the worlds team in at least two events come july.
I just wanted to know how i can watch this event in live?
because i'm French and i really wanna watch this event!
About Bousquet I think it's ridiculous to say MP has stolen his technique since we know what MP and bowman have done in this sport!
I'm French and i support the french team but i can say that swimmers of others country are good if they are!
It is pity to see how we can damage links between country with reflections which do not even deserve to be raised.
bousquet has a world record...and it probably the most impressive on on the books. gump.
jenny
will there be 50's of fly back and breast swam at this meet?
he's definitely no bousquet, nor ever will be.
As for Chris' blog, yeah, the Americans will have to answer the rest of the world like they had to last year and in years past. Keep in mind the two biggest meets are yet to come for the Americans -- world trials and worlds themselves. My guess is that the USA will remain more than competitive if not on top. They seem to answer the call year after year. I see it being a little down this year at worlds, much like in 2001, but I predict the U.S. will still lead the medal count at worlds.
To see the Jap guy break Lochte's WR in the 200 back click on the link. You have to put up with some biased ozzie commentary though!

Cullen Jones is going to put up a great time if he is wearing a next gen suit.
michael phelps will go a 20.93 in the 50m freestlye this weekend.
Way to steal bousquet's technique that jerk.

Is this Phelps new freestyletechnique at 1:35? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LVg3so7LvYQ
Phelps might do better in the 50 fly instead. The back 50 of the 100 that is. He'll get smoked at the start! Seriously stick with the 100 free. Don't mess with the sprinters, they usually dont like newcomers and even more the ones banned because of smoking pot.
P.S: GHJr was the exception because he is cool but MP just doesnt have it.
