A world class swimmer in his day, Mike has established himself as one of the premier sprint coaches in the sport.
At the past 2 Olympics, his sprinters accounted for the top 2 spots in the 50 free (Hall and Ervin in 2000, and Hall and Draganja in 2004).
At the NCAA level Bottom played a role in the rise of Auburn as an assistant from 1991-1994. He then returned to his alma mater The University of Southern California in 1995, and by 1997 the USC women won their first ever NCAA championship. As the sprint coach at Cal, Mike's sprinters went through a stretch of 5 years of 100 yard free NCAA championships.
After a full year at The Race Club, Mike is now the head men's coach at The University of Michigan.
Around 20 Olympians as well as multiple national team members come together in what looks on paper to be one of the fastest meets in recent memory. Last year at The Missouri Grand Prix a World and American record fell, proving that Missouri's pool is one of the fastest in the country. Add to that an even deeper, faster field of swimmers and the debut of the new Speedo LZR and we've got the makings for a smoking fast kick off to the long course season. Oh yeah, and the format is set to prep the Olympians for Beijing... we're going prelims at night finals in the morning. Better eat your Wheaties...

Mike bottom is the best swim coach in the world. Over the last 3 olympiads...before china, Mike Bottom's elite group took one half of the 18 medals in the sprint events. Now thats impressive. Give this man the credit that he deserves. He's the best.....
i like mike's honesty. in fact, i like that quality in a lot of swim coaches you've interviewed. unlike other sports, swimming tends to share more. coaches share ideas on training and thoughts on results. it's not like coaches in other sports that would take questions you ask and say "that's a good question...", then proceed to make the statement they want to make without addressing the question. they're kind of like politicians.
bottom's candor is refreshing in the modern age of "spinning".
