Mark, are you by any chance, the son of John Warkentin who once lived in India as a child. If so, I was a very close friend of your uncle, Paul, and know you family.

Can somebody explain the game of Bean? I have no idea what he is talking about.
If you listen closely to Mark he exhibits the classic distance swimmer mentality - you do it because youre good at it and you learn to love it even though it isnt as popular as sprint or shorter events. Way to go, Mark. Best wishes in Beijing.
Great interview Garrett, Mark is a very insightful and interesting man.
He is spot on about LaTourette. He is the future of American distance swimming. Traditional and open water, if he chooses to be.
Best of luck to Mark in Beijing.
Need to clip out the final 2 - 1/2 minutes of this interview where Mark speaks about how to build USA Open Water Swimming... and post it so people view it before tuning out over all the bean commentary!
Mark is right on here with his vision.
Every open water swim I have attended this Summer in SoCal showcases a herd of young Mission Viejo kids racing any distance offered - from 500 meters to the 5K - and they are FAST!
We're all so psyched that you hung in there Mark working so hard. And now you have earned the opportunity to represent California - oh and yes - THE USA!
Good luck in Beijing!

Before he hit the open water, Mark trained at USC with names like Vendt, Bridgewater, Keller, and Krayzelburg. Intense practices with these guys shaped him as a competitor, and a bean master. July 18, 2008
