Growing up in Italy Fillipo naturally wanted to be a soccer star. But luckily for the swimnation, his young success in our sport sucked him into the water. Pippo, as his friends call him, was originally a breastroker. In 2001, around the same time he began to train with his current coach Claudio Rossetti, Fillipo became a freestyle specialist. By 2004 he was winning Italian and European titles, and was part of a the bronze medal 4x200 freestyle relay at the 2004 Athens Olympics.
He followed up his Olympic performance with a World Championship Title in the 100 free in 2005. In 2007 he successfully defended his title at the World Championships in Melbourne Australia.
