for everyone who doesn't understand:
If you watched Jones from Aus you would have noticed that she did the same thing. You can take your 1 fly kick at any time during your pullout, but your hands can not still be in the streamline position, meaning, that you must start your pull. Kitajima seems to pull down right as he does his kick, but I was watching it and it almost seemed that he started his kick first instead of pulling his arms apart first.
The main reason why more elite swimmers tend to do this is because you can do a fly kick, then do a pullout and undulating your body at the same time and it is legal as long as you don't kick your feet down like you are taking a fly kick. If it looks like you kick twice they will DQ you. Who knows if it is faster, but the best way is to try both styles and have yourself timed to mid-pool or something to see which one is faster for you. The new one may not be for everyone. Make sure the timer is watching to make sure it is legal.

"Interpretation: A dolphin kick is not part of the cycle and is only permitted at the start and turn whilst the arms are pulling back to the legs or after the arm pull whilst wholly submerged followed by a breaststroke kick."

what part of "whilst" do you not understand?

In the rule you just posted, nowhere does it say that the dolphin kick has to take place while the arms are pulling back, or after the arms have pulled. It is its own sentence and the only requirements it lists are: (1) The swimmer must be completely submerged when the dolphin kick occurs, and (2) following the dolphin kick and subsequent breaststroke kick, the legs should remain on a level plane and without alternating movement.

found this on the FINA web site:

Breaststroke (Rule 7)…
SW 7.4 During each complete cycle, some part of the swimmer's head shall break the surface of the water. After the start and after each turn, the swimmer may take one arm stroke completely back to the legs. The head must break the surface of the water before the hands turn inward at the widest part of the second stroke. A single downward dolphin kick followed by a breaststroke kick is permitted while wholly submerged. Following which, all movements of the legs shall be simultaneous and in the same horizontal plane without alternating movement.
Interpretation: A dolphin kick is not part of the cycle and is only permitted at the start and turn whilst the arms are pulling back to the legs or after the arm pull whilst wholly submerged followed by a breaststroke kick.
According to this FINA-supplied interpretation Kitijima’s stroke is illegal, as the dolphin kick is only permitted “whilst the arms are pulling back…or after the arm pull.
Q...how would you like to be able to do, in essence, two or three kicks in your pullout? That's not an advantage?
hansen better kick it into gear

Dont you think they would be making a bigger deal about it if it was illegal? Last olympics they must have shown kitajima's pullouts about 100 times. I didn't think anything of it when I saw it tonight. I don't feel like it gives him anymore of an advantage either. thats just me. Try it out yourselves

this is true. I mean my friend on my team did it at our conference meet, but i dont know about D2 nationals. I think i remember he had to change his pull out style but idk you might be right on this one. Kitajima does cut mass corners. Alex dale oen did work in that semi though, and hansen looks like straight garbage. his stroke and feel for the water is horrible right now.

Hmmm...i'm pretty sure it has to come with the pull not before it.

You gotta think that gives him an advantage...maybe theres a reason he's gotten such a high profile. Heres a thought, how about I just learn how to cut corners so much to get good and then I'll just blatantly break the rules so no one calls it...perfect

you can either do the fly kick before your pull out or do it while your doing your pull out, but you cant do two. at least thats how it is for D2 swimming, idk how FINA rules are but thats what it is in D2

Kitajima has always bent the rules. And never been cought. No high profile swimmer will DQ'ed for anything on the int. stage. You have to swim butterfly in the breast like that greek guy to be DQ'ed. Hope Hansen wakes up in the semis.

is it just me...or does Kitajima still do an illegal pull out? His fly kick comes before the arms go to his sides. But...like last time....no one will call it on him. I hope Brendan has a Royal Flush up his sleeve to wipe the pull with him
