I realize this is a creative approach but I feel there a A LOT of coaches out there thinking and coaching like this. I know, as a coach, I feel there are many coaches that are creative and put this kind of thought into workouts.
If you are a swimmer looking to go to college and you like this stuff do your research. Coach Winslow is one of these guys
Not sure about Utah being on the rise but I do think this coach is one of the best out there. It is great to see a creative coach making waves in our sport. It is just not an overnight thing to turn a program around.
Bryan said: OK is all this smack talking really necessary? This looks like a good way to get stronger and have fun at the same time, which is what sports are all about. You can't really argue that these exercises build strength, and I'm sure they do more than just this during the season. With regards to all the talk about UNLV having nobody, thats clearly not true, and Utah isn't that bad of a team, they just lack the depth that UNLV and BYU have at the championship level, at least on the men's side. But honestly, its the Mountain West. There are some good swimmers there, but its not the Big 10 or the SEC. I would love to see UNLV go up against Auburn or Michigan and watch their score the "almost tripled" by a real national powerhouse.
UNLV is on the rise my friend. The depth of talent you speak of is 95% freshman and sophomore. Give UNLV the money of a "powerhouse" school and you would have yourself another top school. However, it is not all about money to win championships as they have well shown. They will fare well at the National Championships, and hopefully get some well deserved recognition. Comparing times to some of the other nationally ranked top teams well within the top ten teams, UNLV prevails over many of them. However, you are correct in saying that they could not stack up to Auburn or Michigan.........yet. In a few years, I believe people will be discussing UNLV as one of the top swimming schools in the nation.
Anyways, this is neither here nor there regarding the video these comments are posted under. The circuit is very creative, and good job to everyone at conference.

i dont think utah should ever talk about any other team in the conference. this past week proved that utah does not have a "championship team" as they believe they do. they got dead last in the mtw with unlv almost tripling their score. reading farther down on these comments its said that unlv and the rest of the conference have no one this year. im pretty sure that utah did not even win one event. and didnt marco ferraro say he would win the 200 free?. he didnt even make the "a" final and then became everyones in the consolation heat. for anyone that thinks utah is the , please go over this past season and review how they did...
Each station takes 8 minutes: one minute every two stations to rotate and put on equipment. It is the fifth version of the circuit this season. Easiest version of the circuit if you ask me...
Anon said: It's pretty clear that UNLV has been tapered for the all their in-season meets. Plus they will get crushed in the diving events. The only thing they have is three decent sprinters and thats all i will give em.UNLV doesn't stand a chance at conference this year. Start runnin rebels your streak is over.......
You guys are idiots for awaking the sleeping giant...
The Rebels don't have to talk.
We led an undefeated season and I have never raced as tired in my 16 yr career.
We have not rested up to this point.
We are living in a world where our goals have no constraints and no ceiling.
We seek pain and conquer it.
We are ready.
We are hungry.
We will win again.
But keep talking, it only makes it that much sweeter.
See you in a few weeks.
PS This is the last you will hear from me on here.
I would die for that inch.
Love,
"mononucleosis"
PPS Im baaaa-aaaaaack....
Of course the circuit changes throughout the year. There are many different cycles of the circuits, depending on the phase of the season. And yes, of course the Utes do more than sprint circuits. This is 3 hours of the week MAX for them. Remember the NCAA allowed practice time? Oh yeah, that would leave a solid 17 hours for pure swimming sets and weights.

If you think that this is the only thing that teams do, you are crazy. They probably have done 3x[10x100s] or something like that more frequently through the season. This is why you do sets like these. You find the power to do the little things during your races.
Greg Winslow is an awesome creative coach. There were some brilliant stations mixed into this workout, inluding the video analysis, the double bands. and the relay exchanges. All excellent for building front end speed/ power and specific skills.
I worry that with 10 different stations, the athletes are less likely to master the skills of one station, and less likey to maintain intensity throughout the entire cicuit.
The more I learn about swimming the more I realize that workouts like this are almost useless as a function of training. They are, however, great for team moral and early morning workouts.
The real base of any good swimmer comes from becoming more efficient while training the actual stroke. All the bells and whistles in the world won't help you swim the 200 free like 10x100 3 times around. Maintaining a velocity over a distance during that set is much more relevant than climbing a rope, swimming with a bag on your head, or kicking in sneakers. Why do you think Sean from King talks about swimming in the lazers: to simulate what you actually do in a race is much more important than the things that go on in this video.
That said "who doesn't want to get up in the morning to this workout?" Sure, sure kids should never have fun at swimming but every now and then something like this is great.
I wish our practice was this creative. Are all the practices this creative, do you have another one? I mean you think about this - the starts - Greg does not seem to be afraid to try something different. Do the swimmers like it there?
I usually say bad things about the videos on here because this year has not been as good as last year but FINALLY we have A GREAT VIDEO!!!! this coach seems so freaking cool. I would love to swim under him. I wish your team luck at conference! You deserve to swim fast.
i thought the t-shirt and chutes were great. What i liked even more was that thing over the guys head... Underwater kicking, on the last lap of a 100 back for example (assuming a 15 meter kicker is swimming), is very uncomfortable. it's easy to become a bit panicky and come up when your body is screaming for oxygen instead of staying down for 3 or 4 more kicks. It's going to be interesting to see how Utah is holding their walls at their champs
The video explained they were 3 weeks out from taper, and it was 2 days before the Utah Men beat BYU in swimming only to be dragged down by diving in the overall score. If I were a betting man I'd put all my money on Utah to stomp BYU at conference and if I were a Rebel, I'd think about Running too...
Hey "Not A Fan"...you dont happen to be from a MWC team are you? just a guess haha and i agree, too much 2 wks before conference...unless they have been training like 14 yr old girls, then they'll hit their taper fine
21 days out, do they even have anyone that will make NCAA on the team. Sounds like they should foucs more on there duel meets too... when did they do this circuit - before or after they got their tails handed to them by the cougars? spend more time working hard and less time having fun and drawing on the chalkboard and maybe you could win a conference dual meet.or two. See you utes at conference.
I agree this is a good video with some great drills. Totally disagree with RacingBreca. C'mon this is creative but not overdone. The fact that the guys sinks, floats, balances, sprints, then hops out after the rope climb shows that the Utah team doesn't have any bs in their practice. They keep their power stuff moving for the most part.
Of course we'd all like to see a step test once in a while. Maybe they're doing that today. Coaches can't just start doing stuff different when Garrett shows up.
Garrett, I think a great way to show this type of workout would be to follow one person around to all the stations. We'd get an even better feel at that point for what it means to be IN the practice.
This circuit definitely looks legit. Racingbreca doesn't know his head from his ass if he thinks the things within this circuit aren't applicable to swimming fast...nice job Utes, look forward to seeing you blow up at conference!!!
You can tell it is not just for the camera as it would be hard to organize a station set up like this one for one practice. I wish my coach was this creative. I would love practice if we did this just every once in a while. Do they do this all year long. I'm sold... a Utah fan! It will be fun to see how this works for them at their confernce meet.
This is definitely not just for the camera. There's an old sprinting DVD with Dave Marsh that has very similar drills to the ones seen in this workout (specifically the wet t shirt). Great workout.
I liked the concept and think most of the stations were well thought out and could be incorporated for the middle distance/sprint groups...once or twice per week in mornings. Maybe the kids would come to am practice less grumpy if you did this!?!?
LIKED Video. It's nice to see a coach use effective creativity. First station engaged the mind with race specific lengths-nothing like viewing what your doing. How about those double loop bands working on breakouts - very applicable. 25's side by side racing -a good way to create a relay scenario where the fourth person goes for the chase. Rope climbing engages the muscles -then make em go.
Racingbreca-you actually got me on here congrats- this video is GRRreat. Grab an idea and create your excellence. Well done Winslow.
Hmmm...
It looks interesting for the athletes, but come on? A wet t-shirt,a bucket, and a bag over your head sounds more like a bad date than productive swim training.
I understand that gimics are entertaining for viewers, and useful for the coaching community to share, but it is also a distraction. Wouldn't we also love to see college athletes working through a 7*200 step test?
utah is on the rise too. and unlv will be worrying in a couple years at conference when utah is faster than they expected..
cant wait.
