- See Less - Garrett started swimming as a summer leaguer at age 7. He swam 2 years of high school and decided to take the sport a little more seriously after going to his HS State Championship on a relay as a junior. His senior year, he was a runner up at the Washington State Championships in the 50 Free.
After 5 years of collegiate swimming, he hung up the goggles as a national qualifier in both backstrokes and graduated with a degree in Broadcast Journalism from The University of Missouri.
A few months after he graduated he started floswimming.org.

is there any way we can cleanup the message board here? age-group swimmers do frequent this site as well...
I think Garrett had sex with Coley because Coley is very gay he can not stand up to a 65 year old quadrupile bypass gay ex president.
Coley can cry and scream and gay team members listen to him because he has one girl who was taught by some one else how to swim
i heard coley had one of the best swimmers in the USA try out and he told him to get out of the water because his sexual partner was the ex president of the club joe Dahl
Gotta give credit to coaches like Coley who are always looking to shake it up...too many settle into a routine, and while some may like that, improvement/growth comes with new challenges.
No doubt, the best video on Floswimming! Garrett and Coley have such compatible personalities, it's very evident in this great video. Made me laugh and I was definitly surprised by how fast Garrett is! Coley seems like a really fun coach!
From this series we've learned that Coley is a coach whose training sessions are inventive and effective and now we have evidence that he seems to be a great motivator. Lots of positive reinforcement combined with specific instruction and session flow culminated in a great swim for Garrett. Keep an eye on Coley and his team, there will be many fast swimmers coming from LOSC. Nice job Garrett developing this series of videos and letting us peek at LOSC and at putting yourself out there in the pool to the benefit of the Floswim community.
Why is everyone shaving their bodies these days? Were you preparing for a big meet, or its just the style now?
Weirds me out that most guys do that now a days, coming from an east coast lifestyle where we don't shave anything but our face except when it comes down to the big meets.
Yea. Actually, now that you mention it, thats true. I got times almost half a second slower too. Plus, People who go 21.2 in the 50 don't usually go 22.2s in practice.
not bad. for an old man. not to take anything away from garret. not sure if its the video feed being slow. but when i time those swims im getting nearly a half a second slower........
Were you a sprinter in college? For not being in top shape like you said, it's still rather impressive to rip a low 22 after a bunch of lactate producing sprints and hypoxic work. Also, with underwaters like that, my guess is you were either a butterflyer and/or backstroker too.
I saw Garrett swim in college and his underwaters were indeed the strongest part of his game. Especially in his 200 backstroke.
To be honest, I'm kinda embarrassed that I just got beat by Garrett. I went a 23.2 on Saturday morning after a 6400 yd IM set. I need to get up and go 22.2 now. I'm pretty impressed, I did not know that Garrett was that good! It looked like he could've gone about a 24 for a 50 fly too!
I was a 50/100 guy when I first started swimming club. But my freshman year of college I became more of a backstroker. I kept swimming free on relays but I focused more on the 100/200 back and 100 Fly.
This was about 3 weeks ago, and since then I've had trouble swimming on my own or with a masters team just because this practice was so engaging. 800s at mile pace long course just aren't the same, at least for me.

Pandora's Box!
Ah, but the question is will Garrett want to get in everyone's pool for a workout? I know I would hesitate to jump into an Eddie Reese or John Urbancheck distance practice.

Man, that 3-2-1-0 breathing stuff is HARD! We did 10 100s like that on 1:20 with paddles and a buoy, then the next day we did 8 on 1:15 with just paddles.
Loved the practice! hahaha...this coach has a great since of humor! Garret, what did you swim in college? This does look like a challenging workout...even for someone who is in shape!
P.S. VERY dissapointed you cheated on that 100 breathing 3-2-1-0. =/
Garrett - I'm very, very disappointed. As a student of the sport I expected to see straight arm freestyle for your 50. I just don't see you getting down to :18+ with that old school stroke.
Workouts at Lake Oswego looked like so much fun that I decided I had to get in and give it a try. It was not easy. Granted, I'm nowhere close to top shape but the short bursts, hypoxic challenges, and fast stuff off the blocks really made for a challenging little workout. May 5, 2009

Who's afraid of new? Not Lake Oswego!
Good vid, love the commentary. Like the way Coley switches it up.
Garrett had to preform at the highest level b/c he is trying to impress a certain ex girlfriend..if you know what I mean
The speed was definitely surprising. Gives me a lot of confidence considering I whup on Garrett every time we swim together.
yeah! that's quality sports journalism!
Great WWW Garrett, 22.2 is legit for an old guy like you.
I'm figuring with LZR on and a decent pool, you're already about 18.71.
Priceless

Best vid yet...
dude Garrett McCaffrey is legit! he can throw down with the best of them!

Hey Garrett, 9 months with Coley and a Jaked suit, I bet you go 19 flat.
