- See Less - Darren has been swimming all his life. He was a four year letter winner and team captain at Roosevelt High School in Seattle, WA. He began his career as a collegian at the University of Michigan. Although he was not nearly accomplished enough to join the Michigan swim team, he continued to swim on his own. After two years at Michigan he transferred to Pitzer College, where he competed for three seasons, and also ran track. Darren enjoys chocolate milk, Gossip Girl and all things swimming related.

Thank you floswimming for the great coverage of this meet. You guys are great.I don't get a chance to see my son swim to often. It was nice to see his races.Keep up the good work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anonymous Coward - great post letting people know the strong history behind the meet.
Zajac actually was a member of the 76 team and you are right about his reputation as an outstanding individual.
I also want to add that the Zajac foundation is an incredible organization that helps a lot of kids that are in need - another great example of the people in the swimming community making a difference.
The meet will be great - look forward to seeing you on Friday Darren - when do you come into town?
Wonderful that Floswimming is going to cover the Mel Zajac Jr.: Just wanted to post a little bit about Mel. He was a Canadian National Team member through the early 70's - I think he went to Munich in '72 and Commonwealth Games in 1974. A great guy, friends with everyone. He drowned kayaking in the Chilliwack River just outside Vancouver in early '80's. A real tragedy.
To make matters worse, his little brother was killed in a avalanche a few years later, while heli-skiing.
Mel & Marty's parents have funded a charitable trust in the boy's name which continues to operate today.
Nah, brah, JEI is where it's at this weekend. Tae Hwan Park vs. Ous in the 400 and 1500 free, Nathan Adrian vs. Lezak in the 50 and 100, Rebecca Soni, Caitlin Leverenz, Julia Smit, etc. on the womens side, oh yeah and Damir Dugonjic (The tallest breaststroker... in the world!) vs all the other cal and stanford men in breast.
FYI..I think the Day 2 Finals video labeled as "200 Freestyle" is really "200 Breaststroke". Great coverage of the meet overall!
I hope flo comes to Quebec Cup as well, seeing as how Mr. Phelps will be in action.
