Come on, these scientists are measuring drag and bouyancy. You mean to say that they can't get a fricking yard stick out and calculate 50% permeability? Right.
At the CSCAA conference, Mark informed the crowd that it was his opinion that FINA would go back to entirely non-permeable suits on Jan. 1 2010. They will do this, because as David said, 50% is an arbitrary number and it would be very hard for them to determine true percentages of permeability.
Lets hope the NCAA doesn't take lessons from FINA and ban previously legal suits. I know for a fact several NCAA records were set with B70s and winning relay members were wearing the Jaked.
The Jan. 1 2010 FINA standard requires that only 50% of the material can be non-permeable and must be divided 25% torso and 25% legs. This is apparently the rule that took out Blueseventy, which is mostly non-permeable. 50% is a totally arbitrary threshold for limiting so-called air-trapping. That's the first red flag signaling a bad rule. The other disturbing part of this arbitrary rule is that it appears tailored for the LZR's material ratio. We are supposed to believe that's just a coincidence?
If they pass a 100% permeable rule, are caps going to have to meet that requirement too? If anything can trap air, it's a cap. There's an obvious absence of a clear philosophical foundation for approaching the rules regarding emerging technologies. Until FINA establishes one, the problems, confusion, and inconsistencies will continue to undermine the sport.
What I do not understand about allowing suit modifications is how will people know the difference between a suit that didnt pass and the same suit with modifications?
Are you a conspiracy theorist?
