A 2-time Olympian for Australia, Brett was a 17-time All-American at Auburn in the late '90s.
In his second year as the sprint coach at Auburn, his work speaks for itself. This year one of Brett's swimmers, Cesar Cielo, set the NCAA record in both the 50 and 100 freestyle.
i agree with THAT statement. what a chump. i met him one time and he just kept playing with his nose. i thought he was a little boy. can't believe he's a division one coach
Hawke is a chump, and this video has little to do with people hating. He's got a huge ego, which is all well and good - but people are people and the reality is that he's no better than anyone else. The type of things he's been involved in at Auburn are very questionable, and at the Olympics as a swimmer as well. Someday people will know the true Brett Hawke, and it's not a good picture to look at (even though he thinks he is a beautiful man). The Lord will strike him down.
did this one on new years day a couple years back, i don't see why everyone is hating on hawke for this... it's just a set. hurts like hell, but what else is new?
If you really think that Auburn swimmers really "push the limits no matter how bad they feel" you are wrong wrong wrong. Auburn is overrated. Hawke is overrated. Did you see how poorly they swam this year?
I would stay away from imitating a team that has done nothing in the post jaked era.
I did this set as a "farewell party" when I had to move away from my old team. It was awesome!!! The coaches made it optional, and everybody but three swimmers (girls included!) decided to participate. Great idea for team bonding and teaching swimmers how to push the limits further than they can imagine. The team had a great season after this... go figure.
I can't wait to do this set in florida, it's going to be awesome.
Also, wrestler tough guy down there. I've seen wrestling practices, they're hard, I have several friends who wrestle, but remember this, at any point during your practice, you have the choice to just sit down, and take a breather. Have you ever tried sitting down and taking a breather in a pool? It doesn't work very well.
Personally I think that they should be happy, any wrestler would give an arm to drink as much water as he could until he threw up. Be thankful that you can drink, you don't know what ur missing. Once you have wrestled, everything else in life is easy.
the point is to push through the pain untill you throw up. so when you have to race at a big meet you know what it feels like to go so hard you throw up
holy crap thats ridiculous. my coach was born and bred from pure evil. if he ever sees this video he'd use warm pudding or cold grody gravy with that wierd skin still on it
no, the point is brett doesn't wanna give away his training techniques, so he just makes up funny stuff like this, leaving all these viewers confused hahaha

reminds me of the many times I've stopped after an intense set, trying not to blow chunks in the gutter-one of these days it's gonna happen
I mean this is a really discusting video but for some reason I can't stop watching it. I would pobably throw up on the 1st one because just drinking 1 cold gatorade makes me sick and if you throw in the having to drink the whole bottle at once and doing an all out race I would be the first one to go just like brian. I would not even do it because in the beggining it said that they are not allowed to stop until they barfed so why even do it? Still watch it though.
those guys are pro! they are the best in planet, they love what they are doing, they are awsome!
if u never trew up in a hard training set its because you dont know how to train. dont like it? go ballet. This is swimming and this is why Cesar is a olimpic gold medal! gratz to Brett. Go Hard ot Go Home!
this is the coolest video ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We need more Brett Hawke videos. To coach a young man to Gold in his first two years of coaching is unheard of! I love his videos. And by the looks of his 200+ comments, so does everybody else.
Great stuff Hawkey, the sprinter spew is whats its all about. Most lurker swimmers out there dont know how to push there bodies to that level & beyond.
Runners do sets like this on the track all the time, 400-1600 repeats with doughnuts or beer in between. I'm not even a swimmer and here I am checking out your sport! It's not about the gatorade man!
BRETT HAWKE IS THE MAN!!!! ALL OF YOU THAT COMPLAIN ABOUT WHAT HE DOES. WELL SEE HOW FAST YOU END UP AND IF YOU EVER COACH THE LEVL OF ATHLETES HE DOES!!! KEEP IT UP BREAK
cielo is pro. he gets paid to swim in brazil. its been a hot button issue for the NCAA for a while ast to weather or not they should let him compete. as for the other guys they are not paid.
This is the colest thing I have ever seen. So cool. I wish that my coach gave us a little variation in practices like this. Practices get kinda boring sometimes cuz we just do the same things over and over and sometimes he even uses the same sets over and over again. I hope my coach gets inspired by this to make his practices with more variation. THat would be great. I love floswimming so much. i check it everyday because of stuff like this. Recently I have even set it as my homepage just because of all the rad stuff that goes on on here. I just love every part of this video and the whole site.
they are professional swimmers. not in the sense that they get paid. but they are some of the greatest swimmers with a wealth of experience. i think that makes them professional. they know what they are doing... how can anyone say they don't? they aren't stupid. they wouldn't throw away years of training and preparation just for a video. I don't see how anyone can mock these guys. why don't you grab a suit and jump into a lane next to them. I wonder who will win?
they can chug and sprint all they want...it seems to be working...cielo went 21.9 twice unshaved, untapered a few days ago and ludquist is a world record holder
Then there is a lot you don't know. Pro's train with the college teams all the time. Look at Texas, Arizona, Florida... how long of a list do you want to make?
Even if the NCAA did not find out until after the fact, all of those championships would/should be stripped and serious sanctions will be handed out accordingly. Have you ever seen or heard of some of the retroactive penalities they have handed out? The fab five at Michigan does not exist according to the NCAA.
Until that report comes out about the ad in Brazil and he was taking money (which the NCAA will be glad to investigate), you don't know squat. Unless you are prepared to name your sources don't throw garbage around. Leave that for collegeswimming.com
Did your scholarship get taken by a foreigner and that is why you are so bitter? Just remember that one of the greatest US backstrokers of all time is not from this country, Lenny Krayzelburg ring a bell?
I thought this was a great set even though a lot of people think its stupid. Even if this was a joke its a really good idea, Alot of puking is mental so its lets see how long i can hold off until i puke, working on your mental capacity without doing 11,000m. Obviously what ever they are doing at AU works.
he has been pro for two years, but he has been able to compete bc the ncaa doesn't do enough to control what the foreigners do when they go home to their countries (where they belong) to train. cielo appeared in a speedo add earlier this year (which is illegal) a few teams reported it to the ncaa, but by the time they checked it out, the ad had been pulled.
Wow all you people are rediculous ... you argue about this stuff like it really matters. I agree with erik wiken. If you don't like the video, then big deal just don%2
Wow all you people are rediculous ... you argue about this stuff like it really matters. I agree with erik wiken. If you don't like the video, then big deal just don't watch it. I appreciate videos that show very accomplished swimmers having fun in the pool and doing different things. Keep it up Garrett!!
ha why is everyone freaking out these kind of sets are what makes swimming interesting. Don't get all upset about their set even if it was a joke its still ballin out of control.
You guys are like obese people that keep ordering diet weight loss pills, looking for the next quick fix. This set will not make you better, obviously Auburn is mocking all of you and they are putting on a show for all you monkeys. The guys love the camera and are horrible actors.
ok, you people obviously dont get it... for the 4th time... its not just this set, its the concept of using sets like this, not necessarily puking gatorade, but stuff that keeps the sprinters interested... and look where the CONCEPT OF TRAINING LIKE THIS(not puke sets, but fun, outside of the box sets) has gotten them...

"dumb people" im sorry i didnt have my editor double check my grammar...great spelling on your part though. and cielo went pro like a month ago, noy two years. you dont need to call anyone a moron
You may all also want to keep in mind the huge strides that Cesar has taken in his time at Auburn. Can anyone admit they knew his name before he swam there? I think that the results talk for themselves. Maybe less criticizing and more acknowledgment is in order . . .
Perhaps you should just look at it as them being more experienced, because clearly some people cannot see the word "professional" without throwing up red flags and accusations.
"wrong" you need to work on your grammer. "these guys have all GONE pro" and to "whatever" you are stupid, they are still in school but they get paid to swim, that's called a professional athlete moron. cielo has been pro for like 2 years now.
Our coach did something like this on Valentine's Day. He gave us as much candy as we wanted, all he wanted us to do was finish the practice without stopping at all. 3 kids, including myself, threw up that practice. We did about 7500 meters that day
We did this set with big macs instead of gatorade with my 11-12 year olds. I was hailed as the coolest coach ever until the night crew custodians showed up. Most expensive set ever.
yea it would be typical of an australian to try and hide their workouts
and beside theres nothing wrong with this set it pushes ur mental strength
and training till u throw is common place in many sports such as boxing footbal soccer track etc.
I'm going to put my neck out there again, to ask what we learned from this video.
1) Auburn Sprinters and Brett Hawk are incredibly creative.
2) The mental game is a priority to sprint athletes.
3) Auburn Sprinters and Brett Hawk like pulling our leg and putting on a show.
4) A segment of the Floswimming audience would rather chug gatorade to throw up, than train to get better.
5) Message boards might not be the best place for intelligent conversation.
It's funny that the same kind of people that agree with 24,000 a day don't agree with this kind of set.
More so than "athlete safety" the bottom line here is that there are a lot of people who are jealous of Auburn's success and even more who loathe the way their sprinters train.
If "athlete safety" were that important to these people, they should push to outlaw insane club coaches from giving insane sets like 400's butterfly for 10 year olds and 600's butterfly for punishment, not ripping on mature post grads who swim for a living.
You know what, I hope those insane club coaches do this with their 12 year olds. I would much rather they do this set than some of the garbage that club coaches have them doing.
12 x 400 IM for 10 year olds?
Can we say overtraining? Injury?
How many athletes have been pushed out of the sport by shoulder injuries?
I laughed so hard and got so much from it! This was a "learning experience". Eveyone swims with discomfort, pain and nausea at some point in their career. These guy brought that scenario to themselves.
If you think this is irresponsible let look at Elite Team XYZ and their blowout 25s set. Blow all your air out and sprint without breathing. If you feel this is educational and teaches a valuable lesson , you are a hypocrite. Lack of oxygen to your brain and passing out in the water, seriously! This is far safer, the only cost is discomfort and a few dollars in gatorade.
For all those worried about their precious sport of swimming and it being tainted by this, relax. People I am friends with who knew nothing about the sport know about Phelp's DUI and D'Arcy caving in some guys face. Choose your battles better.
obviously you aren't paying close enough attention, there are pleant of things to learn. These guys are among the best in the world they know it and I bet it can be a challenge to fing things they find "fun" in order to keep there interest level up! Brett is a very creative guy knows his guys very well and there is no harm in this set. So untie the knot in your panties and if you don't want to try stuff like this don't I for one like to see the weird and wacky stuff great coaches do. That doesn't mean I will do it with my group but it makes me think and gets the kids thinking too!
No one is taking anything away from Garrett. This site is great and I hope this recent video doesn't cause any problems for Garrett or the website. Some of us are just questioning the value of the video. I log onto this site to learn from other coaches and teams. I didn't gain anything from watching the Auburn guys throw up.
IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, START YOUR OWN WEBSITE... Seriously, garrett has busted his butt to make this website what it is; i think he has the right to put whatever he wants on this website. And besides all the arguing and bickering... this set is food for thought...
Garrett, your doing a great job, please keep it up! And if you think its good enough for the website, please post, there is something to learn from ALL of this...
This was a fun Friday afternoon in Auburn...
Keep in mind these guys are professionals. This isn't something Auburn or Floswimming recommends.

Ok, I've been pretty good about releasing a workout a week so I figure for the sake of alliteration I should start doing a Weekly Wednesday Workout. What do you think?
Who did you swim for in college?
seriously, he should be embarrased.

I HAve never thrown up EVER.
its called master exploder
thats intense, the whole point of that is to throw up. GAH!

I swear this is the worst thing ever.
I'm sure anyone whos done it feels my pain.
Thanks Floswimming

Too funny, too true.
what a horrible set XD but apparently they thought it was fun to do.....kindof

Great fun day set haha. There sure wasn't too much actual chugging going on for the last 1-2 drinks haha.
Only 2 more till 100 ha ha.
