creatine is only a muscle growth agent...it fills the muscle with water in order for the muscle to look bigger and also train harder...most of the supplements swimmers use are things like multi vitamins, fish oil, zinc and protein...these are all to aid recovery time so you will be able to work harder the next day and not feel as tired. i use to swim in england for Loughborough University and also have trained with the U of A squad a few years back. to be completly honest if you want to take supplements to aid your training make sure you choose the right one cause some protein shakes have banned substances in. i have heard some swimmers take a supplement called Norateen which is similar to creatine but stronger, if this is taken on the day of a drug test you will fail. there are plenty of legal herbal remedies on the market which are safe to use for training purposes and will also have no effect on your body. i wouldnt recommend taking supplements until you are fully developed and in a proper training programme.
but at the end of the day in order to succeed in anything you do you need to be in the right mind frame and if your not no supplement will be able to help you.
yah actually i just started using creatine i quit swimming for 4 months to run xc and needed to get my strength back fast so i figured why not try it... anyways i spent $20 on a container that will last 5 months on the internet and holy its shown awesome results! i gained 12 lbs in the first month and after 6 weeks of back swimming im already going better times then i was last year at the time of nationals/state... it makes me feel a lot more powerful for sprints and kickouts especially! i just quit taking it 2 weeks before big competitions to lose the water weight but u still retain the muscle and i drop about 5lbs.
not only does it make u stronger it makes ur muscles fatigue slower because the creatine is pretty much like a legal steroid and increases muscle recovery and a bunch of other sutff that i dont know much about but i noticed it anyways i would try it out
Creatine does help with strength, but with the added bonus of water weight gain. I tried using creatine for a month way back in HS (99), noticed change but at the price, I was better off eating better (increase in lean protein, which is easily absorbed and contains more other essentials that creatine does not).
The only thing I would recommend is a combination of foods, and maybe a recovery drink after a workout. Endurox R4 & restore for two. Most supplements aren't worth it, like straight whey protein. If you have too much, you just pee it out ( = expensive pee).
does creatine help swimmers? USAswimming says most studies say no but does anybody have any experience? how does it compare to other products like puresport?
Colleges & swimmers seem to keep their supplement use a secret. The trainer will discuss how to use it. One product I've seen a college swimmer use is Herculin MRF-4. He mixed it with water. I would like for them to say we do this workout etc and we also recommend ----- supplement. It does help but there's many risk. You believe the trainer knows the amount he's telling you to take is safe. From what I've read there are risk after years of taking it so like the one person posted it may not be worth it. You decide.
Many athletes take supplements that has creatine in them. You need to weigh the risk and the benefits. I did use supplements that contained creatine and if I had to do it all over again I wouldn't have. It's not worth it. There is life after swimming. It's all about the clock/points not the persons health after college. Take care and make the right decision.
I have not ever heard of colleges sending kids supplements before they get to school. There are restrictions in the ncaa about what a school can provide and I don't think they can provide creatine, especially before a swimmer is enrolled in school. At the same time, many coaches will recommend certain supplements and it will be up to the athlete to purchase and take these.
Well there's so much talk about LZR's and banning them, seems creatine supplements would be banned since it is a race enhancer. Some programs use it. I hear before your freshman year of college supplements are sent to you to get on. I'm a swimmer and I've never nor will I consider using them (I will swear to that). My college years are ahead of me and I want to pick the college coach that knows how to train the old way. Any insight would be helpful. I know creatine is legal so if swimmers/athletes use it, that's totally up to them. I'm not judging.
sick photo too (the frontpage portion). I like how the mix of the red brick wall and the chick's red skin gives you that "feel the burn" sensation... inspirational haha

I'm very impressed by the fact there are no differences between gender in workouts !!
I would like to know some opinions about the crunch and side crunch, the abs are here in order to stabilize the spinal column and it's thanks to our abs that our chest remain straight Instead of falling forward.
I have readed that it might be better to do the plank and side plank in order to make strong core without back injuries.
Thanks a lot if someone can enlighten me about this point !
It is suggested that compressive forces on the lumbar spine are high during sit-ups, especially the late stages of the exercise when the legs are flexing into the floor. For this reason, it is suggested to perform crunches instead of full sit-ups.
Logically, it makes sense to avoid full sit-ups to prevent the suspected high compressive loads on the lumbar spine, but if a swimming has no history of back injury it is not necessary to avoid the maneuver. Multiple abdominal exercises in various positions are recommended for numerous reasons and spine protection is one of these reasons.

Doing only planks? it might be better to your back but you will not have as good a result as crunches
bicycle crunches are one example and for the more advanced you can have athletes incorporate a larger range of motion by having them bring their scapula to their opposite lateral aspect of their knee.
Another example would include a plank routine with mountain climbers and cross over kicks to initiate hip flexion in the prone position. Planks can incorporate breast and fly specific movements by having the athletes rock forward and backwards on their toes in the prone position.
John Mullen said: Great workout, great song Evidence is great. It was great to see the utilization of their facility, I've never seen side-ups performed over the edge of the pool. One criticism, I would have liked to see more exercises of the abdominal routine using multiple planes (especially in freestylers and backstrokers). There was a lot of unidirectional movements which are common in breast/fly, but free and back use a lot of rotation and a crunch doesn't simulate that movement.
Good observation and I think valid point, but this is only their pre workout routine - their strength coach Neil does the things you are suggesting in the weight room with them in seperate sessions - when we talked he addressed that specifically.

What are you a pure age group swimmer? Do you have any experience in this sport?
Ya performance is important but at a senior level you have to understand that performance out of the pool in things such as dryland is just as important - you need to have the ability to perform in the pool after a dryland workout such as this as dryland workouts like this at the senior level should be standard.
I really hope you aren't a coach of any senior level athletes as I am sure they are just wasting their time under you. If you are a swimmer I hope you are 13 years old, because if you are a senior athlete you pretty much just summed up your whole mentality to the sport.
Wow is that really necessary!! Dude many ways to skin a cat - but thanks for trying to make yourself look smart by slamming someone else - always mature.
Im gonna chime into this one. This is a typical dry land practice before getting in. Zona is all about working the negative in abs. Everyone can crunch their brains out, but when you can control yourself on the way down that is where you gain the most strength.
Im gonna take a little credit to those side crunches over the pool, had been doing them in the weightroom for years :)
Also, it is well known that if Frank cannot do something, then we are not to do it. Example being running stadium steps. One summer we ran 15 ups at Arizona Stadium...if you have seen it, you know thats hard. We did this because we kept going until Frank could not do anymore, we then ran back to the pool and swam.
Great to see some Zona practices, take me back! :)

Why do people act so snotty on this site? Who do you think you are? I'm going to bet you're not near as intelligent about swimming as you would like to believe.
When I observed them practicing last may, Coach Busch was doing the dryland circuit alongside as well. Apparently this is a typical practice for him. I think its great.
So much of what they do out in Tucson is not going to be exciting to some people, but clearly they've found the simple stuff that just plain works.

Why there aren't any texas dryland or lifting videos? I mean I love the stuff with Auburn and Zona here but I am really interested to see what Eddie has his guys doing out of the pool. Does Eddie and Kris wanna keep it on lockdown? I mean seriously it seems pretty secret . So Garrett how about askin EDDIE about that? And I love this coverage too garrett, sick nasty man!

Ok, I've been pretty good about releasing a workout a week so I figure for the sake of alliteration I should start doing a Weekly Wednesday Workout. What do you think?

not that special but simple, and i think the simple things work the best.
