A 2-time Olympian for Australia, Brett was a 17-time All-American at Auburn in the late '90s.
In his second year as the sprint coach at Auburn, his work speaks for itself. This year one of Brett's swimmers, Cesar Cielo, set the NCAA record in both the 50 and 100 freestyle.
holy crap thats ridiculous. my coach was born and bred from pure evil. if he ever sees this video he'd use warm pudding or cold grody gravy with that wierd skin still on it
no, the point is brett doesn't wanna give away his training techniques, so he just makes up funny stuff like this, leaving all these viewers confused hahaha

reminds me of the many times I've stopped after an intense set, trying not to blow chunks in the gutter-one of these days it's gonna happen
I mean this is a really discusting video but for some reason I can't stop watching it. I would pobably throw up on the 1st one because just drinking 1 cold gatorade makes me sick and if you throw in the having to drink the whole bottle at once and doing an all out race I would be the first one to go just like brian. I would not even do it because in the beggining it said that they are not allowed to stop until they barfed so why even do it? Still watch it though.
those guys are pro! they are the best in planet, they love what they are doing, they are awsome!
if u never trew up in a hard training set its because you dont know how to train. dont like it? go ballet. This is swimming and this is why Cesar is a olimpic gold medal! gratz to Brett. Go Hard ot Go Home!
this is the coolest video ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We need more Brett Hawke videos. To coach a young man to Gold in his first two years of coaching is unheard of! I love his videos. And by the looks of his 200+ comments, so does everybody else.
Great stuff Hawkey, the sprinter spew is whats its all about. Most lurker swimmers out there dont know how to push there bodies to that level & beyond.
Runners do sets like this on the track all the time, 400-1600 repeats with doughnuts or beer in between. I'm not even a swimmer and here I am checking out your sport! It's not about the gatorade man!
BRETT HAWKE IS THE MAN!!!! ALL OF YOU THAT COMPLAIN ABOUT WHAT HE DOES. WELL SEE HOW FAST YOU END UP AND IF YOU EVER COACH THE LEVL OF ATHLETES HE DOES!!! KEEP IT UP BREAK
cielo is pro. he gets paid to swim in brazil. its been a hot button issue for the NCAA for a while ast to weather or not they should let him compete. as for the other guys they are not paid.
This is the colest thing I have ever seen. So cool. I wish that my coach gave us a little variation in practices like this. Practices get kinda boring sometimes cuz we just do the same things over and over and sometimes he even uses the same sets over and over again. I hope my coach gets inspired by this to make his practices with more variation. THat would be great. I love floswimming so much. i check it everyday because of stuff like this. Recently I have even set it as my homepage just because of all the rad stuff that goes on on here. I just love every part of this video and the whole site.
they are professional swimmers. not in the sense that they get paid. but they are some of the greatest swimmers with a wealth of experience. i think that makes them professional. they know what they are doing... how can anyone say they don't? they aren't stupid. they wouldn't throw away years of training and preparation just for a video. I don't see how anyone can mock these guys. why don't you grab a suit and jump into a lane next to them. I wonder who will win?
they can chug and sprint all they want...it seems to be working...cielo went 21.9 twice unshaved, untapered a few days ago and ludquist is a world record holder
Then there is a lot you don't know. Pro's train with the college teams all the time. Look at Texas, Arizona, Florida... how long of a list do you want to make?
Even if the NCAA did not find out until after the fact, all of those championships would/should be stripped and serious sanctions will be handed out accordingly. Have you ever seen or heard of some of the retroactive penalities they have handed out? The fab five at Michigan does not exist according to the NCAA.
Until that report comes out about the ad in Brazil and he was taking money (which the NCAA will be glad to investigate), you don't know squat. Unless you are prepared to name your sources don't throw garbage around. Leave that for collegeswimming.com
Did your scholarship get taken by a foreigner and that is why you are so bitter? Just remember that one of the greatest US backstrokers of all time is not from this country, Lenny Krayzelburg ring a bell?
I thought this was a great set even though a lot of people think its stupid. Even if this was a joke its a really good idea, Alot of puking is mental so its lets see how long i can hold off until i puke, working on your mental capacity without doing 11,000m. Obviously what ever they are doing at AU works.
he has been pro for two years, but he has been able to compete bc the ncaa doesn't do enough to control what the foreigners do when they go home to their countries (where they belong) to train. cielo appeared in a speedo add earlier this year (which is illegal) a few teams reported it to the ncaa, but by the time they checked it out, the ad had been pulled.
Wow all you people are rediculous ... you argue about this stuff like it really matters. I agree with erik wiken. If you don't like the video, then big deal just don%2
Wow all you people are rediculous ... you argue about this stuff like it really matters. I agree with erik wiken. If you don't like the video, then big deal just don't watch it. I appreciate videos that show very accomplished swimmers having fun in the pool and doing different things. Keep it up Garrett!!
ha why is everyone freaking out these kind of sets are what makes swimming interesting. Don't get all upset about their set even if it was a joke its still ballin out of control.
You guys are like obese people that keep ordering diet weight loss pills, looking for the next quick fix. This set will not make you better, obviously Auburn is mocking all of you and they are putting on a show for all you monkeys. The guys love the camera and are horrible actors.
ok, you people obviously dont get it... for the 4th time... its not just this set, its the concept of using sets like this, not necessarily puking gatorade, but stuff that keeps the sprinters interested... and look where the CONCEPT OF TRAINING LIKE THIS(not puke sets, but fun, outside of the box sets) has gotten them...

"dumb people" im sorry i didnt have my editor double check my grammar...great spelling on your part though. and cielo went pro like a month ago, noy two years. you dont need to call anyone a moron
You may all also want to keep in mind the huge strides that Cesar has taken in his time at Auburn. Can anyone admit they knew his name before he swam there? I think that the results talk for themselves. Maybe less criticizing and more acknowledgment is in order . . .
Perhaps you should just look at it as them being more experienced, because clearly some people cannot see the word "professional" without throwing up red flags and accusations.
"wrong" you need to work on your grammer. "these guys have all GONE pro" and to "whatever" you are stupid, they are still in school but they get paid to swim, that's called a professional athlete moron. cielo has been pro for like 2 years now.
Our coach did something like this on Valentine's Day. He gave us as much candy as we wanted, all he wanted us to do was finish the practice without stopping at all. 3 kids, including myself, threw up that practice. We did about 7500 meters that day
We did this set with big macs instead of gatorade with my 11-12 year olds. I was hailed as the coolest coach ever until the night crew custodians showed up. Most expensive set ever.
yea it would be typical of an australian to try and hide their workouts
and beside theres nothing wrong with this set it pushes ur mental strength
and training till u throw is common place in many sports such as boxing footbal soccer track etc.
I'm going to put my neck out there again, to ask what we learned from this video.
1) Auburn Sprinters and Brett Hawk are incredibly creative.
2) The mental game is a priority to sprint athletes.
3) Auburn Sprinters and Brett Hawk like pulling our leg and putting on a show.
4) A segment of the Floswimming audience would rather chug gatorade to throw up, than train to get better.
5) Message boards might not be the best place for intelligent conversation.
It's funny that the same kind of people that agree with 24,000 a day don't agree with this kind of set.
More so than "athlete safety" the bottom line here is that there are a lot of people who are jealous of Auburn's success and even more who loathe the way their sprinters train.
If "athlete safety" were that important to these people, they should push to outlaw insane club coaches from giving insane sets like 400's butterfly for 10 year olds and 600's butterfly for punishment, not ripping on mature post grads who swim for a living.
You know what, I hope those insane club coaches do this with their 12 year olds. I would much rather they do this set than some of the garbage that club coaches have them doing.
12 x 400 IM for 10 year olds?
Can we say overtraining? Injury?
How many athletes have been pushed out of the sport by shoulder injuries?
I laughed so hard and got so much from it! This was a "learning experience". Eveyone swims with discomfort, pain and nausea at some point in their career. These guy brought that scenario to themselves.
If you think this is irresponsible let look at Elite Team XYZ and their blowout 25s set. Blow all your air out and sprint without breathing. If you feel this is educational and teaches a valuable lesson , you are a hypocrite. Lack of oxygen to your brain and passing out in the water, seriously! This is far safer, the only cost is discomfort and a few dollars in gatorade.
For all those worried about their precious sport of swimming and it being tainted by this, relax. People I am friends with who knew nothing about the sport know about Phelp's DUI and D'Arcy caving in some guys face. Choose your battles better.
obviously you aren't paying close enough attention, there are pleant of things to learn. These guys are among the best in the world they know it and I bet it can be a challenge to fing things they find "fun" in order to keep there interest level up! Brett is a very creative guy knows his guys very well and there is no harm in this set. So untie the knot in your panties and if you don't want to try stuff like this don't I for one like to see the weird and wacky stuff great coaches do. That doesn't mean I will do it with my group but it makes me think and gets the kids thinking too!
No one is taking anything away from Garrett. This site is great and I hope this recent video doesn't cause any problems for Garrett or the website. Some of us are just questioning the value of the video. I log onto this site to learn from other coaches and teams. I didn't gain anything from watching the Auburn guys throw up.
IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, START YOUR OWN WEBSITE... Seriously, garrett has busted his butt to make this website what it is; i think he has the right to put whatever he wants on this website. And besides all the arguing and bickering... this set is food for thought...
Garrett, your doing a great job, please keep it up! And if you think its good enough for the website, please post, there is something to learn from ALL of this...
this video is awesome, and as you can probably tell its strictly for entertainment purposes... it also shows that the best sprinters/sprint coaches have fun, unique practices...
This kinda reminds me of the movie Stand By Me, you know, the part where gordie is telling the story of that really fat kid that gets revenge on everybody by puking at the pie eating contest, then everyone else starts puking everwhere
Garret, I'm sorry that many of the people on here are so quick to make up flaws in something that they obviously aren't smart enough to comprehend.
Swimming is fun, it should be fun. We all know these guys put in the work, and if they want to make up some rediculus set to show America, then that just shows us that they don't take life or swimming too seriously, and many people could learn a lesson from that, no matter what age (its not dangerous for 11 years to have fun is it?)
I just saw that Cielo went 21.9 in brazil tonight. I guess Brett has no idea what he is doing. Lets keep thinking that while he keeps kicking our butts.
and to reply to stupid's post, they don't recommend the video to everyone because a lot of people wouldn't be able to handle it. this does not make it bad. i also don't recommend blowing up buildings, but i loved lethal weapon.
even though this is a joke, it still has some good merit to it. think about it. how many times have you swam a meet not feeling 100 percent? this set just simply teaches you to try and swim through a rough day. it seems like it simulates that feeling pretty well.
I think the point that a lot of people here are trying to make is that they want to watch these guys do some serious workouts. 15 X 100 on the minute at Texas was awesome. Kickin' it at Arizona and the USC workout were also very quality and fun to watch because people were seriously training.
Everyone on this site wants swimmers to be recognized as elite athletes and comparable to nba, nfl players, etc but when a joke set like this comes out everyone eats it up and defends it. I'm not saying that going to auburn was a waste of time, and i'm not expecting them to give away all their secrets but at some point you have to show the goods. Respect comes from doing things that no one is willing to or can't do. What does caesar do in X amount of 50's at practice? Do the guys go at it and race each other on a regular basis? Perhaps seeing these guys dying because they are going 100% would get a better reaction than being filled with a gallon of warm gatorade.
It was nice seeing these guys personalities at practice but speaking for myself I think a trip to AU would have been more worth while even if you just hooked up all these guys to a power rack to see what they can pound out. The interesting thing about a lot of the videos on floswimming is that finally a swimmer can make some kind of correlation between practice and races. I enjoy seeing elite swimmers getting yelled at for being on the lane line, or dying towards the end of set because it allows you to relate to the athlete. For once everyone can see that these guys are still human but are pushing their bodies to the limit. Hear you have the most explosive athletes in our sport and there is little to no intensity throughout 3 videos. Sorry, still love the site but I was really sad when I watched these sets. Earlier in the year I could show my non swimmer friends videos on here and they got into it. The last few, especially the weight room, not so much. Sprinting has a lot to do with talent and I%u2019d like to see these guys show it off without a fast skin on.
I talked to an AU swimmer today and was told that they knew garrett was coming and they tried to plan the most ridiculous set ever, as a prank on floswimming
As long as they replenished the electrolytes after practice within 2 hours, they body can recover. Maybe a little exercise physiology is needed by some . . .
I think people really need to stop make a big deal of this. Last time i checked Cesar Cielo was the fastest sprinter the NCAA has ever seen. Set's like this are just what people say...pain tolerance sets. When cesar is dominating people going ut fast and then coming back faster then almost anyone else its bcause he can tune is mind away from the pain and its because of sets like this that people are able to push the limits of what people think is fast. One day someone will think of something like that for 200 fliers and then maybe the world wouldn't be so far behind phelps...btw eamon sullivan and bernard(french) are doing things LIKE this and they have been tossing the 50 and 100 free World Record back and forth for about a month now so people chill, obviousely it works for them no one is making anyone do it
its a good set, not a waste of time. it gives them the right mindset, and its an amazing lactate set... stop hating, you haters are just jealous that youre not sprinters
remember that this year especially, and maybe every year, the 50 free and lots of events come down to who wants it the most.
who's going to want it more? these guys who have shown some toughness, felt like crap and still raced, or the guy who just did the set plain? this will help these guys because they ARE at the level to which this applies. its about having something extra to remember when that guy might out touch you i think. i mean, they dont do this everyday.
look at the guys that are doing this set... IF you want to call a 5th places finish at NCs an off year for auburn, its clearly not because of these guys. Obviously these kinds of sets are working for them, and thats not so say that everyone should try them, but just chill out. and puking from chugging gatorade never hurt anyone
i am surprised that you "coaches" are actually complaining about how this sends a bad image...all the ppl that actually look at this website are fairly educated swimmers and i sure hope no one is dumb enough to try this on 11-12 year olds
what a bunch of babies the whiners are! some of the same folks complaining about this probably got polluted last weekend and blew chunks on the dance floor. now they're outraged. go figure.
p.s. if u.s.a. swimming hadn't suspended garrett, he would have been covering a meet (probably the east cupcake kick-off/splash meet) instead. it's their "fault" this was his only option.
p.p.s. tomorrow's lactate wednesday, junior. i'll pick up the gatorade tonight and leave it in the truck to warm up for afternoon workout.
this video is awesome... and you guys are completely missing the point of this. this goes along with the warmup video, and proves why AU is so good with sprinters... outside the box, FUN sets... duh people
Obviously many of you cannot see the bigger picture. It was not about times (Brett did not even use a stopwatch). This was 100% a mental workout. It's all about pushing past the pain barrier. And last time I checked thats a HUGE part of swimming fast.
nice warning label garret. sucks that people are blowing this up more than it needs to be. who would really be stupid enough to try this with young kids?
Yea, it didnt really produce any great results when I tried doing this set with my 11-12 year olds this morning for practice. I wouldnt recommend it. I spent most of my time raising my voice because they would not want to chug(or scull if your from Australia) these things. I'm not sure what there problem was. I may have injured a few, but it's nothing that wont get better with a few days of rest.
Brett inherited the legacy of Dave Marsh... Brett has some talented swimmers but as a coach has not produced... because people are dumb (for the most part)a program that everyone thinks is great will attract great swimmers... I agree with uncle ben's last words.
What works? Other than making practice fun what was the point of chugging? How did that improve their swimming or anything else? There are other ways of making practice fun.
I bet if you chugged warm gartorade and skipped the swimming you would still throw-up because of all the sugar.
THAT WAS AMAZING and racingbreca...need I remind you that Auburn is the best program for sprinters in the entire nation...this stuff is not a practically joke...IT WORKS
If some coach doesn't have enough common sense to know "maybe I shouldn't do this with my 11-12 year olds" then suddenly it's Floswimming's fault for putting this out there? That's messed up.
as awesome as this is, it is irrisponsible of floswimming and Brett to put this out there. Yeah it's a novelty, yeah it's great team building, but I agree with "skip" that some HS/Club coach is going to try it with 16-17 year olds, or worse 11-12 year olds.
This sight should be about the free sharing of proven ideas and cencepts, not show boating and practical joking. I love the site Garrett, keep up the amazing work you are doing. Don't get caught up in the hype.
didn't Suha Tokman do this set back in the late 80's with his swimmers in Sitka, Alaska? I think he used grape juice mixed with honey instead of Gatorade.
the bear would like to challenge all to warm milk instead. he can throw up like no other...even if hes slightly undersized at the moment. pound for pound simply the greatest ive ever had the pleasure to work with.
AU produced Brett Hawke, Aaron Ciarla, Fred Bousquet and Cesar Cielo all NCAA champions in the 50 in the last 10 years. I agree with max, keep it coming.
I know what they really do... they swim fast year in year out. Try and tell me they don't have the best sprinters in the country every year. Heck they won the 200 fr and 200 med relay's again this year. keep it up guys!
That was what I was waiting for.... Good work fellas!! It looked like you all took one for the team...! I think my fav part was "just watching the excitement and team bonding that was going on" That's how you get to that next level!
This was a fun Friday afternoon in Auburn...
Keep in mind these guys are professionals. This isn't something Auburn or Floswimming recommends.

Ok, I've been pretty good about releasing a workout a week so I figure for the sake of alliteration I should start doing a Weekly Wednesday Workout. What do you think?
I HAve never thrown up EVER.
its called master exploder
thats intense, the whole point of that is to throw up. GAH!
reminds me of the many times I've stopped after an intense set, trying not to blow chunks in the gutter-one of these days it's gonna happen
- who names their dog "chunks" anyway?

I hope my coach doesn't see this video. My biz partner/OWS coach has, though. He recommended I watch it...sick man.
ahahahah
That is to Muench
THIS IS .........:s
ooooowwwww
I swear this is the worst thing ever.
I'm sure anyone whos done it feels my pain.
Thanks Floswimming

Too funny, too true.
what a horrible set XD but apparently they thought it was fun to do.....kindof

Hate it or love it but you all keep coming back for more...

Poor people on cleanup they left chunks....
Great fun day set haha. There sure wasn't too much actual chugging going on for the last 1-2 drinks haha.
Only 2 more till 100 ha ha.

3) Whats the record?
it isn't something you reccommend ... but you post it on your site and is quoted in the video saying "that's the coolest set I've ever heard"??
um, okay.
Successful results. Cleanup wasn't bad...Just breast milk. Good for the soul.

None the less looks like a good time. It's one of those sets where you laugh about down the road.
....with great power comes great responsibility.
Next challenge: a keg stand after each 100.
Would they be better or worse? Arguable.
