McGee has climbed the coaching ladder quickly, and is now the youngest coach in the SEC. But don't be fooled by his age, McGee has over a decade of experience in College swimming.
His career started at his alma-mater East Carolina where in 4 years he coached over 25 varsity record holders. He then spent 4 years as the Men's assistant coach at Navy where his swimmers excelled both in the water and in the classroom coaching multiple NCAA qualifiers and Academic All Americans.
McGee's first head coaching job was at William and Mary where in 2007 he was named Colonial Athletic Association coach of the year.
McGee is one of the best minds in our profession, truly an outstanding coach. He's also one of the nicest guys you can meet as well. Keep up the great work, coach!
I can confirm this is certainly not all we did in practice that day. This was just a brief 30 minute kick progression we did after some aerobic and sprint work, Anyone that claims this is a waste of a practice I suggest you attempt to get in and do it and see how your legs feel the next day! And yes Swimfan the head coach does know more than you.
"stroke group who aren't resting for the meet this weekend."
and
this is hardly a waste of a practice, especially if say some aerobic/heart rate work is done in morning practice, and you end this practice with some anaerobic/sprint work. That would be a perfect day of training. You really think this is all they did in practice that day?
This workout was the day before the game invite. Everyone but a few swimmers rested for the meet, so the workout wasn't wasted, it was supposed to be a light day.
I think this a good way to waste a practice. You can practice the same concepts in a regular workout session just focusing on turns and starts. But I think the head coach knows more than me...
This video shows how Coach McGee focuses on minutiae so he can ultimately interconnect every workout to the final performance. Would like to see more of his approach. Thanks.
Nice set.I don't know if I'd like going that deep though. I wonder if he challenges them even farther than the 16 or 26 or whatever the numbers were..? Great stuff though. I would like to see a push off the bottom and see how high you can dolphin/flutter yourself outa the water. I think one of them was past hips!
I don't think he recommended any certain type of stretching or when the best time to go through the routine is. He said they did stretching after their bodies were warmed up and sometimes at the end of practice. Very cool thought process on the kick progression though.
USC head coach McGee Moody has a kick progression that includes vertical kicking, underwater turns, 15 meter blasts, and an end of the race simulation. November 26, 2008
Ok, I've been pretty good about releasing a workout a week so I figure for the sake of alliteration I should start doing a Weekly Wednesday Workout. What do you think?
Funny, I wasn't aware that South Carolina was in the ACC
