Brent Hayden is pretty crap. he buckles under real pressure, he likes to step up when there is no reason to step up

to anonymous coward...i totally agree with you on that point. But nevertheless, brent is the defending world champion and it just seems bizarre that he doesn't "care" (only word for it that came to my mind..) what all the others do or if there was a new WR in his primary event. I'm not talking about getting up each day and search the net for hours. But I think to look things up and maybe analyze the races of your futur competitors is a good thing and I'm sure EVERYBODY can learn from mistakes that one did himself or others did. Of course, I totally agree on the fact that one shouldn't get all psyched out by results of other swimmers. It shouldn't get in your mind in a negative way!! that's for sure! But I think by being up to date with such things you can get quite something out of it!!

Francois, his point is that what others do has no bearing on him whatsoever. He's going to do everything he can to swim as fast as he can and if that's a second faster than everyone else, so be it, if it's a second slower, so be it. If you give 100% and look back on your race it doesn't matter whether you won or lost because if you did everything you could to win and didn't, there is nothing else you could have done. If he goes a 47 and that's as fast as he can go it doesn't matter if someone else went a 45, because he couldn't do it anyways.

Hoogie was in it, so was Eamon, Lezak, Schoeman and Cielo Filho. I don't think the depth of that field is something to be questioned. He also swam a 47.5 leading off the relay in Beijing and the only reason he missed the final was because he was too afraid to take it out with Eamon in the semi when Eamon set the world record. He also swept the freestyle events at Spring Nats setting Canadian records in each event.

07 worlds was such a joke. phelps would of won, no hoogenband in that race either. he will finish top 5, but he ain't no bernaard or bosquet. aka i dont think he's jacked enough for the benefits of those suits.

Magnini will probably not swim in Rome. He did not make the final in 200m in ITA trials, and only did a weak 0:49,01 in the 4x100m :(
Does not sound good at all.

But nevertheless i think it's quite important to know if there's a new WR for exemple in the race you won at worlds 07....IMHO!!
Yea, you are right, and I guess this is where the coach steps in :)

We are talking about a part of the guys personality here, about how he lives his life as a swimmer. And I just like his attitude, it's healthy and I have no reason not to belive him, nor do I want to :)
You may think of him what you like, I did not try to make you change your mind :)

well then that would be just my way of doing it...and I didn't talk about letting others dictate goal settings. I guess we agree on the fact that you can only control yourself and nobody else. But nevertheless i think it's quite important to know if there's a new WR for exemple in the race you won at worlds 07....IMHO!!

.....i commented like i did because of brent saying...oh you know..i NEVER look up results and stuff! common...who believes THAT?!?! It's part of being a world class swimmer. To know what's going on in YOUR SPECIAL event! I just think it's ridiculous...
I dont think you will find that many world class swimmers who think that much about what others are doing, and THAT is a part of beeing up there.

And if he says that's how he does it, why not just believe it? Has he lied to you before? :)
I was in Melbourne in 2007, and I rembered how people started talking after he won that gold medal, who expected THAT!!!?
Maybe his biggest strenght lies in beeing just like that. And you need it, you cant let otheres dictate your goal settings. That's a part of the whole surprise results we get now and then, and I love that.

A gold medal is a wonderful thing, but if you are not good enough without it, you are not going to be good enough with it.’

The French with Cesar/Sullivan in the mix will be tough to beat, along with the Americans. Unlikely to medal.
