Coach Salo has got to be considered a great distance coach after two of his guys finaled in Beijing in the mile.

But I know most people will poo-poo him.
Personally I think Jon is the best coach I've ever seen, and probably "pound for pound" is the best active "COACH" of any distance out there today.
But you gotta include Salo in the discussion (at least over the last Quad) with TWO Olympic Finalists in the 1500!

One of the true heroes of our sport!!! He's an example to all swimmers and coaches as to what dedication and commitment can yield. Great coach but even better human being. I think Jon should offer a course on how to do it "the right way with no shortcuts". I would take it over and over again!!!!
Thanks for all you've done for all of us.

He makes a good point about the suits. They are a big deal right now but with the new rules they can't get any faster, so in a little while they won't matter anymore.

Great interview. Hope I am on the ball that much when I am 72ish! Good for USA Swimming that he is going to stay with them and bad for Michigan!

I thought I understood that the LZR and Blue Seventy were banned by FINA. Won't the NCAA and USA swimming follow FINA's lead in this? Great video though!
fina pretty much said that the suits cannot get any faster, but didn't ban any existing suits.

College Coach   April 6, 2009 at 9:37am
Jon is one of the nicest coaches in USA Swimming. I approached him on deck during the US Open a few years ago to ask him a simple question about his distance training program and I got a 25 minute answer. If you ever get the chance to talk with him or to see him at a coaching convention, I highly recommend it.

Loss for Michigan? Or did they gain more than anyone could imagine by having him coach and mentor swimmers in ann arbor for as long as he has. he is still on deck there every day for now.

What exactly is his position now? Does he travel around for usa swimming to support club swimming and/or college swimming and scout talent or provide guidence?
What a loss for Michigan..
