- See Less -Garrett started swimming as a summer leaguer at age 7. He swam 2 years of high school and decided to take the sport a little more seriously after going to his HS State Championship on a relay as a junior. His senior year, he was a runner up at the Washington State Championships in the 50 Free.
After 5 years of collegiate swimming, he hung up the goggles as a national qualifier in both backstrokes and graduated with a degree in Broadcast Journalism from The University of Missouri.
A few months after he graduated he started floswimming.org.
12.5.2 Media activities. A student-athlete may participate in media activities (e.g., appearance on radio, television, in films or stage productions, or participate in writing projects) and may receive legitimate and normal expenses when the student-athlete’s appearance or participation is related in any way to athletics ability or prestige. The student-athlete may engage in such activities at any time and may receive compensation at a rate commensurate with the going rate in that locale for similar services. Further, the student-athlete’s name may be used to
advertise his or her participation in such activity, provided the student-athlete’s status as a student-athlete is not used for promotional purposes.
"You are not eligible in any sport if, after you become a student-athlete, you accept any pay for promoting a commercial product or service or allow your name or picture to be used for promoting a commercial product or service, unless:
• The individual became involved in such activities for reasons independent of athletics
ability;
• No reference is made in these activities to the individuals involvement in intercollegiate athletics; and
• The individual’s remuneration under such circumstances is at a rate commensurate with the individual’s skill and experience as a model or performer and is not based in any way on the individual’s athletics ability or reputation. [Bylaw 12.5.1.3]"
Is a movie not considered a commercial product or service? I know athletes can't become models and keep their eligibility, but modeling is trying to sell something whereas a movie is just a movie?
Sounds kinda risky, did anyone clear this with the compliance officer?
thanks Garrett!!!
This movie has potential, better not let it fall down the drain though.
