As someone that has actually done this set before, it is an incredibly challenging set that we used for ALL swimmers whether you were a sprinter, mid-D, or Dist. Distance swimmers had to make 30 out of 30...Mid-Dist needed to make around 27/30...sprinters had to make 24/30...so you could take off 1 or 2 a round if needed. This was a staple of our long course training and it worked! But to address "Anonymous Coward", Dennis has incredibly high expectations...he is NOT sloppy. Back when I swam this set, the goal time was typically our 3rd 50 split of a 200.

I don't understand why a good program like this would allow their athletes to start from a push with anything but a perfect underwater streamline. It's just sloppy...

Goal times are usually right around your goal 200/4, maybe adjusted a bit for individual differences

No leeway on the goals. I was in this set shown my goals were 25.7 fly, 29.8 breast, 26.6 back, 24.2 free. Made them all but one (very first one). One of the hardest sets i've ever done.

I remember doing 100x100s in 100 seconds each back in high school, this looks brutal.

I would love to see an interview where coaches are asked how much leeway they give to the swimmers when giving out times on sets like these. I always felt like coaches gave a little pad to keep spirits up, which is important to do on a set like this.

Your site is amazing, my only criticism is that you can't embed these fine videos within a blog

It is great to get a glimpse of how the "big boys" practice. I wonder how many of the swimmers actually made their goal times? Thanks for keeping us up speed with what is happening in NCAA swimming.

In an individual sport like swimming, any opportunity for true team building (outside of relays) should be greatly valued. Coupling it with a killer workout must be very effective. Good job Coach!

What a great idea! This awesome new website comes up giving us up close looks at some great teams, athletes, and coaches, and you want to turn it into a place where you can bash on someone by saying they suck. Let's keep the comments positive, and support this site, shall we? We have all been looking for a website like this for years, so follow the "if you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say it" rule. Floswimming Rocks!

these guys suck? yeah i guess busting your butt and giving it all with your teammates qualifies you as sucking. i guess trying to individually improve and motivate your team is sucking.

Minnesota Workout Video - Goal 50s

November 8, 2007
30x50s on roughly 1:30, broken up into groups of 10.
Every swimmer has a goal time, and every 50 that he misses his goal he has to make up at the end.

About Dennis Dale

Organization:University of Minnesota
Bio:
Dennis has lead the Gophers to 6 Big 10 titles in the last 11 seasons. Maybe even more impressive is that Minnesota hasn't finished worse than 2nd in the Big 10 in the last 16 years.
