the main reason the set is so good is the WAY these guys are doing it. for example, the body positions, and especially the snorkels. snorkels make kicking soooo much more difficult because of the lack of oxygen (compare the size of your mouth to the size of the snorkel opening). plus, 5:39 for a lc 400 kick is beast :P

I never heard it explained as a practice of "entry". Richard Quick explained it to me as a strategy to get the swimmers to engage their core while kicking. If you try it, you instantly feel it in your obliques. Instead of stabilizing through your hands, it forces your core to stabilize. It may be the answer you're looking for Andereh. Thank you Coach Quick!

he didn't say he went 21 for a 50 kick.. read the post. he was asking a simple question and looking for advice.

"i go a 21 for my 50yards, but if i were to kick on a kick board for 50 yards, my time is like a 45. i just dont get it. whats the magic, i work really hard but it doesnt work for me, any comments would seriously help me. thank you."

Striaght Arms   April 2, 2009 at 6:23pm
The backstroke swimmers kick with the arms straight out because when I was in AU Swim Camp they said there was really no point swimming in a streamline. Instead they wanted to have the arms out where the arms would enter in a backstroke storke to practice the "entry."

Its hard to help you without more concrete information. How is your ankle flexibility? Are your feet holding water when you kick with a board (i.e. are your feet coming way out of the water, creating a big splash or do you feel water both on the bottom and top of your foot as you kick)? Maybe a good question for Darren's mailbag

This is a great set! Thanks for posting.

As for the request of adding more teams in the north, please note that a coach/school/program must be willing to have Floswimming come in and film a workout. i know many coaches in the US are not willing to share their ideas or workouts. They don't want anyone to gain from their team or workout. So i applaud Auburn/Texas/Cal/Germantown and all of the other coaches and programs that are helping all of us gain knowledge and expereience through Garrett and Floswimming. This is THE most resourceful and helpful thing that has happened to swimming in ages.
Keep up the great work!!!

It would be fine to show some teams from the north, but honestly, a lot of the workouts I see from the different programs are just OK. On the other hand, when I see the workouts from the best schools, I am incredibly impressed. Specifically, the Texas men's workouts blow me away; first with the difficulty of the sets, and second with the way Eddie's guys perform on them.

Taking one or two strokes into the wall on a kick set is standard, in my mind. You almost need to do it. Auburn swimmers lazy? FALSE.

so my team did this set tonight in yards (same intervals- we did it with our junior and age groupers too- all crammed into one pool tonight)... it's a beast, if you work it correctly...

at one point i heard quick say on the 200 to just double their fast 100 time... i said the same thing on to my group, and a 12 year old girl went out 2 seconds faster (first 100 was 130, then on 200 went out in 128, back in 130)... so I thought- what the heck. i shouted out on the 300 to be at your 100 plus your 200... 6 kids did it- the 12 year old girl was 126, 129, 128 for a 424... so obviously i shouted out to double the 200 on the 400... i even bet some pushups (by me and my assistant) if someone kicks the 400 under their pb in the 500... 20 pushups for each person...
amazingly, i had to do 40 pushups as the 12 year old girl and another senior gal were under. the 12 year old was 126/130/130/128 for 554, and the senior girl went 546...
i'm not convinced they were killing it like they should have been at the start of the set, probably a bit cautious, but it was a really good set for them. my fastest kickers were in the 510 range on the 400, which is pretty nice for us.
thanks again garrett!

Stroke Into Walls   December 3, 2008 at 9:37pm
I've talked to a couple of college coaches that encourage a stroke into the wall, for fast turns and just overall speed. Their reasoning was that they are encouraging continuous speed without slowing down. It's possible that Quick feels the same way, or its possible that Auburn swimmers are just lazy. I will admit it's pretty cumbersome to kick into the wall and turn around without the stroke.

I also live in the Northeast, but coach a college swim team, sort of preventing me from traveling around too much and filming workouts and meets since I'm sort of at my own workouts and meets. If you have somewhere in the northeast you'd like me to be in the off season maybe we can work something out. Shoot me a message.

Not a coward, I don't mean to speak for Garret or anything, but I'm sure if you helped him get to a school in the north, be it monetarily or otherwise, he would be more likely to visit. My guess is the reason there is so much AU and UT is the proximity to Garrett's location. And I agree with Interesting, I personally can't get enough Eddie Reese and Richard Quick.

Auburn and Texas are some of the best programs and I enjoy watching the best...And Eddie Reese and Richard Quick are my favorite people to listen to. I could listen to Eddie 24/7....other schools make it interesting...but we want to learn from the best, right? (east coast anyhow...hard for Garrett to be on both coasts, all the time). My 2 cents

One way a coach can address that on a swimmer to swimmer level is issuing paces to hold, whether they be specific to that swimmer's times or heart race based.

Ultimately you're going to be more successful as a swimmer if you find the right fast pace though. I understand it can be vague.

Curious   December 3, 2008 at 5:00pm
Just wondering if anyone knows why richard quick had the set start with a 100 and lead up to a 400... I feel like I would perform better at this set if it was descending instead (mainly a mental thing), so i'm curious to know the reason for this, but im sure he has a good reason for this.

Personally, I get confused when coaches use the word "fast" in practice. When coaches use that word with me, immediately I think all out sprint, but obviously you cant all out sprint for that long...I'm definitely a sprint oriented swimmer though...

It is interesting to see the variations in kick that people have. Some with a board and a snorkel face down, some on their back hands at their side, some on their back with an open streamline. This is a great set no doubt, fast kicking and endurance is key to help finish races. Just hate to see the more then one stroke into the wall...its kicking not swimming :)

Constructive Criticism from a man who has never posted a thing on this site other than to maintain his own teams page:

You have the right to your opinion and I can accept that. I am not at all trying to pick a fight, but I would like to know, how does the music interfere with the points the video is trying to convey? Did you want to hear their splashing little feet so you could get a kick count? How does it hurt? How does adding music underneath a swimming video make floswimming "not a swimming site" How does the music steal the spotlight from the video? How does it hurt?
