I swam competitively in HS, and took rec swimming at UC Berkeley. Coach Bottom taugh one class (before he was co-head coach) and he definitely loves the sport. He taught a class that ranged from ex-competitive swimmers to people who had never competed and rebuilt my understanding of the freestyle stroke at non-sprint speeds from the ground up. Before that I had no idea there was much diffference between swimming for the 100 and the 1500 and would always end up with shoulder pain from extensive distance work. Good Luck Coach Bottom!

I think diversity is needed in any sport. We need Mike Bottoms and Bob Bowmans. All of one or the other is boring and not productive. I am always hesitant though when a swim coach sees no excitement in "Traditional back and forth swimming." Coach Bottom has done an amazing job with some exceptional athletes. The key word being exceptional-not the norm. For most kids picking a sport, if land based activity and the least amount of swimming possible is really your thing then swimming may not be the sport for you. I just hope the Urbanchek legacy is given more than a ping degree of respect.

No, he shouldn't have to worry about peakocks* jumping in front of his car in AA, only deer. * I can't spell this correctly. Apparently this site objects to the second syllable in that word!

The Bottom Line

One of the most laid back dudes ever. Mike's approach is even keel because to him swimming's not life, it's a part of life. This interview is really a look into the kind of relationship Mike has with his swimmers.
Oh yeah and Mike, you won't have to worry about those peacocks jumping in front of your car up in Ann Arbor. Congrats on the new gig. Good luck in the next couple months.
