Okay, so everyone's always talking about how you should never doubt Michael Phelps or he'll just use it as motivation.

I don't think Michael can break Ian's world record without a tech-suit. I don't consider it a "real" WR until he does it in an FSII. How's that for a challenge, Michael?

You do realize that he was wearing a LZR? When he makes a reference to trying the suit for the first time in a race, he is referring to the LZR full body in a butterfly race.

Phelps lived and breathes to break Ian's record.
Whats disturbing with Phelps he lacks the honesty
to give Ian his very due respect. Ian did that so long ago
I can't imagine what type suit that was in. Believe me I was there
when he did it, Ian's swim was epic!

Funny everyone commenting on whether or not Phelps knew what the world record was... My experience with these sorts of guys is that they genuinely don't!

The men & women I knew that were of Phelps' class were so focused on their own performance that other times were irrelevant. They could tell their own splits, stroke counts, etc. but, often, they had no idea about other's performances.
You'll note, however, I'm using the past tense in my comments: My direct experience with these sorts of athletes goes back a few decades. Maybe it's different now.

You may or may not notice that when you type the word stupider into the comment box on this website, the spell check doesn't catch it. I wonder why?! Hey I have a website I want you to check out. Its called http://www.dictionary.com and it uses Webster's Dictionary. Maybe you've heard of it? Here you go, man, check it out:

Next time I refer to you, or Phelps, I think I'll just use the word stoopider.

i am almost 100% sure that phelps still has high hopes for his 200 fly, and is likely still training for that event. the 2 fly has been his baby ever since hes been around, and he wont be quick to let it go. im saying sub-50 and sub-151

Yeah, he doesn't care. He put up that photo of Crocker because he loves the way Crocker looks in a Speedo...Those two have been chasing sub-50 for the past five-six years. But I think you're right A.C. immediately below, I think he's trying to imply that Ian's WR is irrelevant.
Yes, please come back Ian, fancy suit or not. I don't care what you wear.

Why would Michael not care what the world record is in an event that he won two gold medals AT THE OLYMPIC GAMES in? Are you daft? If you're capable of winning an Olympic gold in any event, I think the record time in said event is one of the "things that he needed to know," as you so eloquently put it.

Hey El Duder, or El Duderino since I'm not into the whole brevity thing,
I'm glad you brought that up. It definitely struck me as a bit disingenuous on MP's behalf. Heck, I know what that WR time is, and I'm practically senile. And I certainly haven't spent a quarter of my lifetime racing right next to the awesomest dude who owns that record.
That said, that was one badass swim!

There was nothing honorable about what a-rod did. He waited until the day he couldn't get in trouble for it, and then admitted it. If he had come clean during the congressional hearings, that might have been respectable. But hiding until he couldn't be indicted? That wasn't honorable. It was cowardly.

nope Ian will not be at trials. He is sailing on to other things.

Looks like he, Neil Walker, and former UT swimmer James Fike are making things happen in Austin. I will miss seeing Ian race though. That time he put up in '05 is crazy and that was with no LZR. If Mike starts wearing the full body then im sure he will break the record.
