I am looking for some video that illustrates hand and arm placement at the top of the stroke in butterfly. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I think side breathing in fly is similar. Some people naturally want to do this and it works for them. Lifting one's head too high to breathe is probably the most common stroke flaw in fly.

I think there are benefits to both sides. If you can manage to keep good body position breathing every stroke you will be getting more oxygen to your muscles so you'll be able to have more endurance through the longer fly race, say 200. But say, in a 50 fly or a 100 you don't need as much endurance you're depending more on anerobic so you might be better off to keep your head down even if you can maintain good body position breathing every stroke. Ideally, I'd say keep head in line with body as much as possible but in a 200 if you'll benefit more from more oxygen breath every stroke while maintaining good body position.

I heard in an interview with phelps, he said he breaths every stroke because when he tries to breath every other he sits lower in the water and his butt sinks. Bob said the same thing about his stroke.

The reason why we tell kids to keep their heads down in age group is because when they breathe they drop their hips!!! If you would just tell the children what they are doing wrong and help them understand, it might be alright if they learned how to swim butterfly breathing every stroke. You do need strong legs to swim breathing every stroke so that is the only reason why you shouldn't have a young person breathe every stroke while swimming butterfly.
